All I can say is “Wow!” 8 of us from FCS - Focused Community Strategies traveled to Spartanburg to visit fellow Purpose Built Communities network member Northside Development Group a while ago, and they blew us away. If you haven’t checked them out yet, they are doing amazing place-based work, tackling education, infrastructure, and economic vitality. But what impressed me the most: they don’t do a single thing without consulting a core group of community leaders and neighbors. It was obvious walking around their neighborhood just how much time, energy, and humility they’ve poured into those relationships. Building their credibility. Taking feedback. Slowing down. Listening to the priorities neighbors bring forth. I think most of us at FCS were left speechless. Now that we’ve had some time to process, let me say this: #1 I walked away energized - our FCS delegation was furiously taking notes and we’re ready to implement what we learned. #2 It’s clear Northside Development Group doesn’t toot their own horn enough. So here’s a well-deserved shout-out to CEO Michael Williamson and everyone on their team who hosted us: You all are absolutely nailing it, and I’m proud to be doing this work alongside organizations like Northside Development Group. "The Difficult Rebirth of Redfern" (RedWatch): Let's talk about it! This semester at university, I am taking part in Investigating Urban Change. For our A2 project, my group is examining the shifting landscape in Redfern, specifically, 'the Redfern experience.' We want to hear from locals to understand gentrification's effect on day-to-day life. Are trains more crowded than they were a year ago? Has rent increased? Don't blindly fall into the social media propaganda trap! It promotes polarizing views. My recent visit to San Francisco strengthened this opinion. Before visiting the city, I had encountered a lot of negativity on social media about SF and even heard a few things from friends. That was what I was expecting but after spending some time in the city, I realized we never really know everything until we experience it firsthand. I felt everything I had heard was exaggerated. Sure, there were issues of homelessness, dirt, and drug peddlers on the streets. It did feel unsafe in some parts but for the most part, it wasn't all that negative. In fact, LA felt more unsafe than SF or New York. I visited multiple cities like LA, Seattle, New York, and SF, and most cities felt beautiful bustling with energy. So my visit to the USA was definitely like one of those expectations Vs. reality posts. Only that the reality was better than the expectations in this case. Chicago Commons' development team is doing a thing- a BIG thing! It's time to celebrate 130 years of transformative change in and around the city of Chicago. If you don't know the history of this one, please look it up. It's fascinating and very important to labor history. 2. The Tower Bridge in London opened to traffic. 3. Norman Rockwell and Jack Benny are born. 4. William Kennedy Dickson receives a patent for motion picture film in the United States. 5. An extreme national economic depression hit the US in 1894 leading to factories closing and mass unemployment and poverty. 6. Chicago Commons was founded on May 1 by Graham Taylor...but this isn't in Wikipedia's "1894" entry - although I can change that, I suppose.
