Establishing healthy habits when we're young can create the foundation for a better life. That's why, at Tidelands Health, we're proud to support an innovative pilot program that's helping children in our region form healthy habits through outdoor activity. LiveWell Georgetown County, an initiative led by Tidelands Health, is partnering with the Institute for Child Success to equip childcare providers with essential tools and skills to engage children in outdoor environments. “By prioritizing outdoor play and nature engagement in early childhood education, we aim to mitigate the risk factors associated with preventable chronic diseases such as diabetes and obesity, ultimately fostering a healthier and more vibrant community," said Connie Koprowicz, community outreach manager at Tidelands Health.

Addressing Isolation in the Child Care Industry: A Call to Connect Recent studies within the childcare sector have unveiled a concerning trend: approximately 60% of child care professionals report feelings of isolation in their roles. Carve out specific times for peer discussions, webinars, and professional development sessions. 3. Actively pursue mentorship programs or partnerships within the sector to bridge the gap between veterans and newcomers. How do we make sure parents, carers and children are truly at the heart of co-designing early years support? Here are three important ways of working, built into every one of our projects and guiding us as we roll out Thrive at Five in the Northeast. 1. A collaborative approach to designing early years support is essential We've seen the success a community-led approach through our work in Stoke-on-Trent and we're bringing together parents, carers, teachers, health providers and many other community representatives to co-create the programme in Redcar and Cleveland. 2. The value of taking the time to listen cannot be underestimated Both listening to the needs of local parents and carers, and analysing research that has already been carried out to identify problems. This 'discovery' stage is crucial for designing support that makes a meaningful difference. 3. There is no 'one-size-fits-all' approach Communities, families and children whilst having similarities that connect them, each have different needs. We know that the support we've co-designed in Stoke-on-Trent is making a difference to local parents and carers. But as we roll out into new areas, we will never assume that the exact same approach is what people in the local area need. What have we done so far? The beginning our journey in Redcar and Cleveland in 2023, has got off to a great start thanks to the passion and commitment of many people involved in supporting children and families. ➡ We've deepened our understanding through conversations with early years leads in nurseries and schools: local voluntary organisations; police community officers, community development staff, community activists; health visitors; the multi-disciplinary teams involved in the family hubs; the local health and well-being board; and local councillors. ➡ We've commissioned community research led by local researchers to understand the experience of families so we can base our approach for enhancing local support on what parents and carers want and need. ➡ We've had discussions with representatives from ‘system change initiatives’ operating in the area - supported by Sports England, Lloyds Bank Foundation and Changing Futures - to understand what they are doing locally and to explore opportunities for collaboration. What's next? As 2024 gets underway the conversations and community research are continuing, all to inform how we work together in Redcar and Cleveland to positively shape and support early childhood development. We’re really excited to share our how this progresses over the next few months and will be continuing to work with our amazing partners in Stoke-on-Trent, to raise every child to thrive and reach their full potential. #ThriveAtFive #EarlyYearsSupport #Redcar #Cleveland #ChildhoodDevelopment

Embracing the power of daylight in our childcare facility! Did you know that natural light plays a crucial role in shaping our little ones' health and happiness? It's not just about brightening up the room – it's about fostering an environment where children can truly flourish. Exposure to daylight regulates their circadian rhythms, ensuring better sleep and reducing the risk of health issues linked to artificial lighting. But that's not all! Daylight is also shown to enhance learning and exploration. It stimulates cognitive development, sparks creativity, and encourages curiosity. By flooding our spaces with natural light, we're creating optimal conditions for sensory and cognitive growth, while also reducing glare and shadows for visual comfort. Let's not forget the connection to nature it brings, promoting outdoor play and instilling a sense of environmental stewardship. Let's prioritise incorporating daylighting in our childcare spaces, creating nurturing havens where our little ones can thrive emotionally, socially, and intellectually. Contact our team today at commercial@suho.com.au to see how we can best assist you in your next development and check if it incorporates enough daylighting to maximise the learning environment! #Daylighting #ESD #Townplanning #ChildcareCentres #SUHO #EnergyEfficiency #NCC #SectionJ

The childcare industry has historically been challenged by the same issues: high turnover, low learning standards and razor-thin profit margins. KinderCare Learning Companies was committed to tackling these problems. KinderCare's CEO Tom Wyatt set them on a successful trajectory by centering its values: that all children who attend KinderCare programs have the best education and learn from engaged educators and that the families who entrust KinderCare with their kids feel cared for and supported. A look at its best and lowest performers hinted that the organization was facing a culture issue more than anything else. And Wyatt discovered that by engaging with Gallup's workplace science, KinderCare could gain a thorough understanding of what worked and what didn't - and in doing so, take a bold new approach to tackling the organizational challenges that face childcare.
