I pulled some threads for the music industry this year from the Trapital Report 2023 preview. The biggest puzzle for the music industry to solve this year is its revenue model. As streaming growth slows, focus turns to the fact that it’s underpriced. Where streaming revenue accounts for 67% of global recorded music revenue it might be time for a better model. A big line in the sand is UMG taking its music off TikTok (the details: https://shorturl.at/jnxMY). Superfans might be the next big unlock with regard to revenue. Streaming hasn’t quite captured value from the most dedicated fans (who are willing to pay for more). Spotify is a great example here because they’ve tested a bunch of different ways to diversify their offerings and offer more value to fans. Podcasts, audiobooks, live ticketing, merch (more on this: https://shorturl.at/coyFM). Outside of streaming and fandom, AI’s impact is also going to be felt in music. Technology is always said to be an industry killer (vinyl > cassettes > CDs > streaming > AI). Hopefuls will focus on the potential of AI. Like for independent artists covering off on many job functions with half the resources. But mostly, for personalized music services. It’s what people love about Spotify’s algorithm.
