Melbourne's MPavilion has played host to numerous 'starchitects' over the past decade, and this year is no exception, with Japan's Tadao Ando recently completing the 10th MPavilion. Bringing his distinctive style to Queen Victoria Gardens, this Summer's MPavilion showcases beautifully constructed concrete, pure geometries, and water. These elements are commonly found throughout Ando's work globally, including the Chichu Art Museum, the Church on the Water, and Museum SAN, to name a few. Ando possesses a unique ability to maintain a consistent style and objective in his designs — emphasizing the natural environment — regardless of the context and typology. With the MPavilion being one of his smaller-scale projects, it's interesting to experience how these ideas are scaled down and still communicated successfully. The raw materiality and reflective water enhance and spotlight the natural surroundings of the gardens, with strategically limited yet highly considered viewpoints outward towards the foliage and sky. Paired with the simple form, visitors experience a sense of emptiness and silence, highlighting the interplay of light and wind and creating a holistic and peaceful ambiance. This year's MPavilion presents a stark contrast to the previous one — a bright orange and highly textured canopy designed by All(zone). Both pavilions share a focus on filtering light into the space, but each takes a distinct approach to achieve this goal. Which one do you prefer? The Church of Colònia Güell (Catalan: Cripta de la Colònia Güell, IPA: [ˈkɾiptə ðə lə kuˈlɔniə ˈɣweʎ]) is an unfinished work by Antoni Gaudí. It was built as a place of worship for the people on a hillside in a manufacturing area in Santa Coloma de Cervelló, near Barcelona (Catalonia, Spain). Colònia Güell was the brainchild of Count Eusebi de Güell; who enlisted the help of architect Antoni Gaudí in 1898. However, work was not started until 1908, 10 years after commission. The plan for the building consisted of constructing two naves, an upper and a lower, two towers, and one forty-meter-high central dome. In 1914, the Güell family halted construction due to the death of Count Güell.[2] At the time, the lower nave was almost complete so between the years of 1915 and 1917, it was completed and readied for use. The Church is one of the seven properties Gaudí built near Barcelona that are Unesco World Heritage Sites. Collectively, these sites are known as the Works of Antoni Gaudí, and show his "exceptional creative contribution to the development of architecture and building technology in the late 19th and early 20th centuries." #design #architecture #space #history

A small hill town in Tuscany, province of Siena, Pienza is a deliberate experiment of transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, of the transformation of a medieval village into a so-called ideal city, at least formally speaking. Mainly, such a metamorphosis was commissioned to the architect Bernardo di Matteo Gambardelli nicknamed Rossellino, between 1458 and 1462. In his 1987 book “Pienza: The Creation of a Renaissance City”, the American art historian Charles R. Mack wrote this intriguing parallelism: «The town is a Renaissance Williamsburg, without the artificiality of restoration.» Really, is it so? Indeed, some artifice seems plausible, in the Pienza of the time as well as in the characteristic New York neighbourhood of today. Ultimately, an architectural mind doesn't change that much, even across the centuries. For instance, let's look at the photos below on the right, portraying the Cathedral in the celebrated main square of Pienza, seen from the outside and inside respectively. Now, it's evident: the façade and its context represent the perfection of a Renaissance classicist, symmetrical and perspective style. Yet, as soon as our gaze penetrates into the church, what appears before our eyes is one of the purest interiors created in a late Gothic style, including the large ogival window of the apse, which by the way is one of the most daring constructions of the same genre. Perhaps, then, the whole jewel of Pienza isn't just an episode of cultural transition to an early Modernity, but also a composite, nostalgic and touching farewell to the deep sacred or even magical Middle Ages.

Despite the significant number of projects modernist architect, art historian and politician Joesp Puig i Cadafalch worked on, he is often overshadowed by his contemporaries, Antoni Gaudí and Lluís Domènech i Montaner. But his legacy remains throughout the city of Barcelona through pieces he inspired, influenced and created.
