“A madman with a dream” 😬 No not me… On my latest trip to see our partners in Ireland I flew to Knock, an airport I’d never used before. Outside, overlooking the grounds stood the statue of Monsignor James Horan. Intrigued as to the who and why I read on… “The 1980s news report was a classics of Irish Journalism. Veteran reporter Jim Fahy was understandably bemused, having just chanced on a Catholic priest surrounded by workmen and bulldozers on a west of Ireland hilltop, miles from anywhere. When the incredulous Fahy asked, "Monsignor Horan, what on earth are you doing?" the priest replied light-heartedly: "We're building an airport – now don't tell anybody. We've no money but we're hoping to get it next week or the week after." But, Fahy followed up, did he have planning permission? "I'm not sure whether I have permission or not," came the priest's tongue-in-cheek reply, "but I'm going ahead anyway, just taking a chance." It was the start of an Irish saga featuring a remarkable character with some extraordinary ideas. Not all he dreamt of came to pass, but what he achieved was scarcely believable: he turned an improbable notion into a reality.” It really got me thinking, in business we spend a lot of time measuring and managing by data but often we see the biggest results from what can seem like an outlandish idea, taking a chance and having a huge drive to succeed… Does that make me a madman or can we call it entrepreneurial flair? 😁 #Ireland #Business #entrepreneurmindset

Youth Business International (YBI) has just announced an impressive slate of new trustees, who together with the wider board will help drive forward our strategy to create #1millionjobs through 250k youth-led businesses. Talking with fellow CEOs of social impact organisations over the years, I know that getting the right non-exec leadership is something we all wrestle with, so with our announcement I’ll share some key milestones and insights on YBI’s board development journey . 👉 New Chair (2021) · Marta Krupinska joined us in late 2021, taking over from our founding chair. A younger, female, serial entrepreneur, she isn’t your typical non-profit board chair. But we didn’t want the status quo – we wanted someone who would bring new perspectives, different connections and instil a stronger entrepreneurial spirit at the highest level. 👉 New Strategy (2022) · Like a new CEO, a new chair wants to know -- where are we going, what’s our ambition, and how can the Board help us get there. And so we embarked on developing our new 2023-25strategy. · I’ve developed many strategies over the years and this time felt different. The #growthmindset & approach of an entrepreneur-chair has really spurred us to be bold, confident and to have the courage to part ways with approaches that served us well in the past but wouldn’t in the future. 👉 New Board Trustees (2023) We were looking for new expertise and perspectives to support our strong focus on driving more #impact and creating #socialchange through youth led businesses - and Babajide, Julie, Lydia, Matt, and Purity really impressed on that front. Across the 50+ applicants externally and from within our network I found that it was: · easy to attract interest in our cause of youth entrepreneurship · harder to find candidates who could blend that passion with an understanding of global network governance · and critical across all board roles that people showed a genuine empathy for what it takes to start and grow a business, especially for underserved young people And a special shout out to Purity and Babajide, our first ever #youngentrepreneur trustees who have been supported by YBI members on their entrepreneurship journey. I’ve already seen the value that YBI member CEOs bring to the board and I have no doubt that the young entrepreneur perspective will do the same. -
Today YBI's Chair Marta Krupinska, our CEO Anita Tiessen and the whole network team are delighted to welcome five new trustees to our board. Congratulations on the appointment to Matthew Wallace, Lydia Savill and Ellora-Julie P. Particular congratulations to the two young entrepreneurs joining our board Purity Gakuo and Babajide Oluwase. We're all looking forward to working with you. Find out more about out new trustees here: https://lnkd.in/eMirUmBj

If you've ever sat in on one of The North Group, Inc's presentations, you know Steve H. likes to talk about the power of failure and is humble with discussing mistakes. I am going to take a minute to tell you what our CEO does right. It is with great joy that I get to promote this because of who Steve is as a human. I have seen several articles on LI discussing how a business is a business, and how employers should not call their employees family and should not build a culture like that. I inherently DISAGREE. There is such a great gift in knowing that your boss and colleagues are understanding of who you are, how to support and nurture your growth, and just care about you as a person. In a moment where I have needed an hour, a day, or have had a difficult personal situation, I have only been met with empathy and grace. When I present passion projects that are separate from TNG, I have been met with nothing but support and cheering. THAT is what breeds loyalty and motivates employees to do their best for an organization day in and day out. So, kudos to you Steve, this is well deserved. #leadership #leadbyexample #crains #40under40 #thenorthgroup #business #entrepreneurship #security #privatesecurity https://lnkd.in/g6HX8HJS
