📌 Yesterday, the European Parliament's ENVI Committee adopted its position on the proposed regulation on preventing plastic pellet losses to reduce microplastic pollution. Here's what you need to know: 📍71 voted in favour, five against with one abstention 📍it includes a mandatory risk assessment plan for each installation that handles annually over 1000 tonnes of plastic pellets 📍FEAD supports the introduction of mandatory risk assessment plans BUT it is important that economic operators define the most appropriate measure according to the nature and size of the installation as there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ solutions. Replacing single-use plastic with single-use paper isn't a real solution to the waste packaging crisis. 🗣 "If we want to address #waste, the #EU needs clear rules against the uncontrollable wave of single-use packaging - no matter what it's made of. " 🎞 In this 1-min video, our Policy & Research Support, Raphaëlle Catté, reminds all Members of the European Parliament why: - Material substitution must be avoided in the EU Packaging & Packaging Waste Regulation (#PPWR). - #Reuse systems for packaging are the way forward for a sustainable future. Packaging waste poses a significant environmental challenge, contributing to pollution and resource depletion. Global plastic waste has more than doubled from 2000 to 2019, reaching 353 million tonnes, with packaging contributing 40%. Over 50% of this waste ends up in landfill (OECD ORG). Challenges such as inaccurate labelling, wrong date codes, and invalid barcodes in production packing contribute to the disposal of packaging items. We need ‘right first time, every time’ to ensure accurate labelling and reduce the amount of wasted packages. Harford have enormous experience in helping food and drink manufacturers ensure greater accuracy of labelling for control of allergens, date coding, quality and much more – thus giving manufacturers greater confidence in the labelling of their packages and products. Driving Continuous improvement and operational excellence, Working hand in hand with FMCG Leaders to Improve efficiency, eliminate risk, and increase the overall Business profitability💷
we all know the eight forms of waste that occur in a manufacturing process. These eight wastes are often used in lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives to identify possibilities for improvement in business processes. Harford's MES/MIS solution enables the root cause investigation of downtime and wastage, revealing inefficiencies, bottlenecks, and areas for improvement that can help you reduce the wastage in the factory to save transformation costs and improve your bottom line. A Wise man once said: The most dangerous kind of waste is the waste we do not recognise. Feel free to drop me a DM if you are looking at improvements in 2024.

What are the advantages of certified soil-biodegradable mulch films? ✅Due to their soil-biodegradability, certified soil-biodegradable mulch films help to stop leakage and the accumulation of microplastics in agricultural soils, unlike conventional plastics when these are not completely removed or properly disposed of. ✅Certified soil-biodegradable mulch films do not cause loss of agricultural topsoil. ✅Certified soil-biodegradable mulch films represent a useful tool to reduce plastic waste at source, since they avoid completely the production of a category of plastic waste difficult to be collected and disposed of in the first place. 🌎♻ 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗪𝗲𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆 ♻🌎 Pellets generated in the manufacture of plastic products can become a waste product 🗑.They must therefore be handled correctly to avoid any residual discharge of these small plastic fragments into the environment. ✅ Molecor participates in the Operation Clean Sweep® Europe programme to reduce to zero any loss of pellets during its activity. https://lnkd.in/e9Sz9WXe

🚨 US Lawmakers Propose Tax On Virgin Plastic Production 🚨 💰 Under the REDUCE act, a tax of up to twenty cents per pound of virgin plastic used to make single use products would be imposed. ♻ Revenue collected would then be put into a Plastic Waste Reduction Fund to support efforts such as improvements to recycling infrastructure or addressing pollution impacts from plastic production. 📜 While the law is yet to be passed, it does signal an increasing trend of government legislation around the world aimed at tackling plastic production. ❓ This emphasizes the urgency to switch to recycled plastic in the production of packaging. What are your thoughts on this potential legislation? #plasticpackaging #legislation #sustainability #georgethomas

Next week all members of the European Parliament will vote on the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (#PPWR). Here's everything you need to know to sort through the trash talk 🤬 👎 As things stand, the European Parliament is poised to significantly lower the ambition of this regulation due to an unprecedented level of corporate lobbying from the well-financed single-use packaging sector. Ludicrous and non-transparent studies from the sector claimed that single-use packaging would have actually been better for the environment than reusables. The facts: 👉 The original PPWR would create 29,000 new green jobs and generate savings for consumers of around 100EUR per year by 2030. 👉 The packaging industry uses 40% of all new plastics in Europe and 50% of new paper. 👉 7.6 million trees will need to be cut down to meet the 400-470 million tonnes of paper the industry demands. This is the story of David and Goliath. Environmental NGOs battling for transparency, sufficiency, and social justice, while up against the single-use sector who says that switching from single-use plastic to single-use paper is enough. We're asking MEPs to keep ambitions high in the #PPWR and #MakeThrowAwayGoAway! Read Rethink Plastic Alliance's recent FAQs to prepare for next week here 👉 https://zurl.co/J0oX

Plastic #pellets (also known as nurdles!), are tiny plastic pieces used as raw material in the production of all plastic products. 😡 The bad news... pellets are a major source of #PlasticPollution – trillions are released into the global environment each year due to mishandling throughout every part of the supply chain. 👍 The good news... #PelletSpills are preventable with the right policies in place and industry compliance. On April 22, the European Parliament will have the opportunity to consider a regulation to prevent pellet loss and reduce microplastic pollution. That's why we're teaming up with Elizabeth (Liz) Sherr (one of our spectacular Youth Leadership Council Alumni!!) to call on the EU to introduce mandatory, industry-wide measures to address this issue. Join us! Follow the link ⬇ to film a 5-10 second video demonstrating your support for regulation that will minimize pellet loss >> https://lnkd.in/du6ZiRUe Want to learn more about plastic pellets?
