Tragic, just tragic. All of us who work, live and visit the Pacific have smelt at one time or other, burning of plastic waste with other organic waste that is typically burnt on a day of clearing and cleaning the yard. But the scale and impact of what this article presents takes our concerns into the stratosphere. This an example of a valued, useful cultural practice, applied to an inappropriate substance, with terrible results. One might draw comparisons to other inappropriate substances, (highly processed foods) and media, that are then also consumed in culturally authentic ways, but with highly negative impacts.

We need plastics that are part of the „fast carbon cycle“ (=biological carbon cycle) and these plastics shall be recyclable to reduce the pressure on our ressource production and the biosphere. Circular economy is the method to scale the „fast carbon cycle“ which depends on the limited productivity of earths biosphere. We better not use up public goods like air, oceans, wilderness, species diversity by polluting them, destroying them. They are limited goods.

A marathon read but it boils down to the common denominator of plastic producers. When America starts talking about recycling, you know it is among the nations that are profiting most from plastic production. The irony is, in the yesteryear, the third world nations were blamed for polluting the atmosphere with slash-and-burn tactics. We all know what the truth is. Developed nations and their industrial activities, rich boys with toys, such as Elon Musk and other tycoons, polluting in the name of science and commerce. It's time to stop the hypocrisy. Manufacturers that continue using plastic packaging should be stopped. American-owned Fiji Water receives endorsement from "US celebrities" for its plastic bottles product. Go figure.

Time magazine and Statista, we're awaiting a response on this crucial error. Schneider Electric's involvement in fossil fuel projects starkly contrasts with your criteria. This oversight challenges your credibility. Please address this and remove Schneider Electric from your 'World's Most Sustainable Companies for 2024' list.
