Reconsidering the Challenges of Being Human - The Power of Surrealism Surrealism is not merely an artistic movement but also a journey into the depths of the human psyche and beyond – an awakening of the Third Eye that allows us to see the world in an entirely new light. By merging dream and reality, surrealism challenges us to question our notions of normalcy and explore the unimaginable. Artists like Salvador Dalí and René Magritte have guided us through their works into a realm where time and space hold no clear boundaries. Their paintings such as "The Persistence of Memory" and "The Meaning of Night" compel us to contemplate the transience of life and the enigmatic nature of reality while symbolically opening the Third Eye. The Third Eye symbolizes the ability to see beyond the obvious, to perceive the hidden dimensions of reality, and to strengthen our own intuition. In a world often characterized by superficiality, surrealism encourages us to develop this innermost perception and to explore the unknown. Let us collectively harness the power of surrealism to reconsider the challenges of being human and to explore our own humanity. #Surrealism #FineArt #SelfReflection #ThirdEye #Subconscious

I know nothing of a "super-reality." Reality contains everything I can know, for everything that acts upon me is real and actual. If it does not act upon me, then I notice nothing and can, therefore, know nothing about it. Hence I can make statements only about real things, but not about things that are unreal, or surreal, or subreal. Unless, of course, it should occur to someone to limit the concept of reality in such a way that the attribute "real" applied only to a particular segment of the world's reality. This restriction to the so-called material or concrete reality of objects perceived by the senses is a product of a particular way of thinking-the thinking that underlies "sound common sense" and our ordinary use of language. https://lnkd.in/eg5STU47

"Portals R Us" Part II Consider, if you will, the enigmatic realm of near-death experiences, where the intricacies of existence intertwine in profound ways. In these extraordinary moments, as one's physical form hovers between life & death, the soul transcends the corporeal vessel & glimpses the operation theatre from an ethereal vantage point above. Astonishingly, the essence of sight transcends the limitations of ocular construction, demonstrating that our perception is not solely confined to the physical world observed by our eyes. Instead, we find ourselves endowed with a marvelous duality of perception: one that entails the material realm apprehended through our physical senses, and concurrently, the ethereal domain apprehended by the depths of our soul... Indeed, this duality finds reflection in those instances when individuals exclaim, "I foresaw this very event! A premonition enveloped me, unveiling the precise course of its unfolding." Might this signify that the soul glimpses the forthcoming happenings prior to our conscious awareness? It appears the soul, unbound by the constraints of temporal & spatial bounds specific to the material realm, may possess the ability to divulge future occurrences unless we alter our own trajectory. Such revelations echo the phenomenon termed clairvoyance—an acknowledgment of one's capacity to perceive the world through the lens of the soul!... Rather than falling victim to the illusion that the inherent reality of all things dwells externally, we may embrace true enlightenment by recognizing that the lens through which we perceive is inherently intertwined with our own being. Nothing exists apart from us; all manifestations are akin to ethereal canvases upon which we project our perceptions!...✨️ #enigmatic #intertwine #extraordinary #experiences #perceptions #transcends #soul #acknowledgment #externally https://lnkd.in/dx-TE6te

Levels of Consciousness and AI/LLMs - Considering multiple levels may help design AI solutions that are both powerful and safe. In the post below Martin Ciupa shares an analysis of Maya (Illusion) vs Reality (based on Eastern philosophies), and parallels with neuroscience and quantum mechanics. Analysis of consciousness is another profound contribution of Upanishads (Vedantic studies) and Buddhism. In 2023 we saw debates on whether LLMs were conscious or not - just two states. Upanishads offer a deeper analysis of the experience of consciousness and the agent who is experiencing it. In Upanishads, there are 4 distinct stages of consciousness - waking, sleeping, deep sleep, and a fourth state that is all-encompassing. In Buddhism, there are about 14 levels of consciousness. In contrast, Kahneman's System 1 and System 2 may refer to perhaps two levels of consciousness which perhaps aggregate multiple refinements discussed in Upanishads and Buddhist philosophy. The possibility of a conscious AI/LLM created much debate on its existential risk. Rather than treat consciousness as a single state, it may be useful to have a richer vocabulary/analysis. LLMs may not reach the full human level of consciousness but may exhibit some of the lower levels. Or rather, be designed to stay at lower levels, thus be both useful and safe. Interestingly the notion of level of consciousness pervades other aspects of human experience. The process of dying could be a journey through different levels of consciousness; sometimes people do comeback from halfway and share amazing near death "experiences". The development of an individual is also viewed as an evolution through the levels of consciousness (Kundalini, seven chakras). Sri Aurobindo (a Cambridge dropout to joined the Indian independence movement, and had an awakening in prison) wrote Savitri (https://lnkd.in/gnw8xhJU) - considered one of the longest works in English literature, which tells the same story seven times, each time from a different and higher level of consciousness. It was nominated for the Nobel in Literature but Sri Aurobindo's anti-British activities turned out to be a huge disqualification. By the way, in Vedantic writings (as in the post below) we see the word Brahaman and rather difficult-to-understand definitions (https://lnkd.in/g_jpQXpc). It is simply Consciousness. And in that sense, it supports Pansychism's interpretation of consciousness (https://lnkd.in/ggn7VXiY). Martin Ciupa Prasad Kaipa Rajiv Malhotra

Maya is an Interesting concept in Hindu and Buddhist thought. And some might say in modern physics and neuroscience. And indeed the metaphysics of Dual Aspect Monism. See… https://lnkd.in/eCR4Ejr4 Maya (Sanskrit: माया, IAST: māyā) literally means "illusion" and has various meanings depending on the context in Eastern philosophies. 1/ In Hinduism, particularly Advaita Vedanta: Maya refers to the powerful force that creates the cosmic illusion that the phenomenal world (the world we perceive through our senses) is real and separate from Brahman, the ultimate reality. It's not simply an illusion, but rather a misperception of the true nature of reality. Maya operates through three modes: A/ Sattva (goodness, purity), B/ Rajas (passion, activity), C/ and Tamas (inertia, darkness). These modes create the diversity and dynamism of the phenomenal world. 2/ In Buddhism: Maya refers to ignorance or delusion that leads us to perceive the world as inherently solid and permanent. A/ It's one of the twenty subsidiary unwholesome mental factors that contribute to our suffering. B/ Overcoming Maya is essential for achieving enlightenment and liberation from the cycle of rebirth. 3/ Key takeaways: A/ Maya is not simply an illusion, but rather a misperception or veil that obscures our true nature. B/ Overcoming Maya is a central goal in both C/ Hinduism and Buddhism, leading to liberation and enlightenment. 4/ Influences and Synchronicity of Maya with Modern Physics. There are intriguing parallels between the concept of Maya in Eastern philosophy and some areas of modern physics. The idea of Maya as a veil or illusion of the material world resonates with aspects of quantum mechanics, like the observer effect and wave-particle duality (a Dual Aspect Monism), both suggesting a less fixed and objective reality than previously thought. Aspects of Maya also find echoes in theories of entanglement, highlighting interconnectedness and questioning separateness. 5/ Metaphysics of Maya in Dual Aspect Monism The "association" between Maya philosophy and Pauli-Jung's "Dual-Aspect Monism" present an interesting set of convergenct positions between the two. Eg., A/ Rejection of Mind-Body Dualism: Both reject the notion of mind and matter as fundamentally separate entities. Maya posits an underlying reality (Brahman) veiled by illusion, while Dual-Aspect Monism proposes a psychophysically neutral reality with mental and physical aspects arising from it. B/ Emphasis on Unity: Both seek unity beyond apparent duality. Maya points to Brahman as the underlying one reality, while Dual-Aspect Monism suggests an undivided wholeness underlying the mental and physical realms. C/ Role of the Unconscious: Both acknowledge the importance of the unconscious mind. Maya identifies it with the veil of illusion, while Dual-Aspect Monism recognizes it as a reservoir of archetypal patterns and a potential bridge between mind and matter. Continued in comments…
