On career success 🏆🏆 Last week I had the pleasure to facilitate a panel discussion “ From Aspirant to Achiever “during the Goldman Sachs Asset Management #futureleaders conference. We discussed how as an aspirant we I’ll focus on performance and as we move towards achievers managing one’s career strategically and actively will ensure its longevity. Some Friday Trivia for you: With all the focus on Culture, I’d like nominations for the best corporate cultures amongst financial services companies that no longer exist. Please name the company and state why you’re nominating them in the comments below. I’ll go first and nominate Barclays Global Investors (BGI). Not only did it hire and develop great people, but it’s focus on scientific investing meant it didn’t have star managers and it’s high proportion of PhDs plucked from academia gave it a very collegiate and collaborative feel. When I stopped worrying so much about being “liked” at work… I started getting invited to fewer post-work hangs and happy hours. I’ll be honest: it sucked. As a kid, I was always one of the only minorities at all-white schools. I went out of my way to get along with everybody because being liked made me feel safe. This continued when I joined Goldman Sachs out of college. Being everybody’s friend got me along socially for years…but starting my first business was a wake-up call. I couldn’t make good leadership decisions *and* make everybody happy: - I had to decline peoples’ ideas when they didn’t serve the long-term health of the company. - Initiate tough conversations when I saw someone’s performance declining. - I even had to make the hard decision to shut down an entire business. …All hard things that don't make you the most popular person in the room. But as I got older and became more secure as a person — I made more decisions on the basis of my principles… And I found: - I trust myself and my integrity - My values became a part of my organization’s culture - I could guarantee my team more stability and fulfilling work - Maybe I couldn’t be everybody’s work BFF… but I could be a mentor, supporter, and leader All of that is more valuable than being liked. But the biggest unlock: If you treat people with kindness & respect– And make the right choices that prioritize your principles, in the long-term – You will be liked and respected. By others AND yourself.

Silent Dream 😊 Hey everyone, I hope you're all enjoying a fantastic weekend. I wanted to share something personal with you today. Back in 2020, I had the opportunity to visit the Goldman Sachs office to catch up with a friend. I was truly impressed by the corporate culture there, and after interacting with some of the Goldman Sachs team, I found myself deep down considering it my dream company. The people at GS are truly remarkable - incredibly smart, driven, and filled with high achievers! However, I never imagined I would make it there. It wasn't because I lacked confidence in my abilities, but perhaps because I never pushed myself out of my comfort zone to pursue that dream actively. I referred to it as my "silent dream" - a desire I harbored, but didn't take tangible steps and actions to achieve them. Fast forward four years, and here I am, living that dream. And this is because I decided to take actions to pursue it. 💭 The moral of the story? Take action toward your silent dreams. You've got this! 🤗 Now that this dream has become a reality, a new dream has emerged for me. I'm actively working towards it, and I'll be sure to share it with you all once I achieve it. !!!! Just found out that I've been officially accepted into the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program this fall! This has been a long time coming. I applied last year based on the testimonials of folks like Tony Fields and Wendy Pease 🌍. When I was accepted, I was thrilled. I was also several months pregnant and very, very sick. I knew from past experience that I probably wasn't going to feel better anytime soon (I was right). It's unusual for me to draw a line, set a boundary, say no. I tend to say yes first, figure out how later. So it was difficult to admit that right then, I didn't have it in me to complete this program. I wouldn't be able to show up the way I wanted to. So I deferred my admission. Then, when the spring cohort started up, my baby girl was a few weeks old. And...it wasn't happening. I hated hitting send on the email that said I had to decline yet again. This summer, I restarted the application process from square one. I honestly wasn't sure what impact my past deferrals would have. But I felt confident when I told my interviewers that this time around, I have the physical and mental fortitude—and the time—to get as much as I possibly can from this program. My two takeaways: 1. Sometimes, you can't do it all. I hate acknowledging that, but it's true. 2. Waiting is hard. But sometimes nothing is the best thing you can possibly do. I only began to genuinely recognise the significance of representation in role models when I started to mentor others. The start of our careers can feel difficult at the best of times. However when we struggle to find role models we can relate to, who look or sound like us, it can feel isolating, leading us to question our place within the industry. Though role models don’t necessarily have to mirror one's appearance, it's natural for individuals to look for similarities in those they admire. EnCircle mentoring has a mission to spotlight such role models and share their insights on navigating the various challenges we face in our careers. We aim to empower individuals, helping them traverse the corporate landscape more confidently and effectively. The lack of diverse leaders in senior roles is a testament to the need for such initiatives. Last night's event at kindly hosted by BlackRock aimed to provide support for those who often find themselves wearing multiple hats - managing their regular job roles while also championing diversity and inclusion within their organisations. While the night was a great success, it did sadden me that more than 250 that expressed an interest in attending were unable to, due to high demand. We do hope to see those of you who were unable to attend at our winter social where you will be guaranteed a place. We saw a diverse mix of attendees from various seniority levels and ethnic backgrounds. A mixture of BlackRock employees and EnCircle members. There was a brilliant introduction by Gavin Lewis, author of the 'The Opportunity Index', which was followed by a panel discussion on the burden of D&I leadership with Femi Bart-Williams FIA, Lauren Baer, Marisa Hall and Henry Odogwu! Afterwards there were final thoughts from David Ashaolu-Coker and a chance to connect network with food, drinks, and music by the incredibly talented Lia White. Wow! To tell you the truth these types of events always leave me tired yet immensely inspired. The joy lies in observing the transformative power of shared experiences and advice. On Friday, December 15, 2023, I graduated from the prestigious Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program with Cohort 36! And with the honor of being chosen to be a Goldman Sachs Ambassador for my cohort. If you know, you know. It's competitive for a reason…the investment Goldman Sachs places in us is beyond what I can capture here. After 15 weeks of perseverance and commitment, even in times when I thought: how am I going to get through this intense, accelerated program that has me rethinking everything every week…I am here to say anything that I say will be an understatement. This wasn't just a professional or personal thing. It became a spiritual thing. I didn't just find an incredible cohort of entrepreneurs like me. I found, as one of my cohorts said, human beings that feel like distant cousins. I wasn't just inspired by former scholars who came to speak, I realized many were already in my community living the promise and goal of this program. To say we had outstanding business advisors, professors and panelists and resources each week with great learnings is small talk. We had leaders that poured into us with full intent to see us succeed (proud to say some were already friends and a Soror!). In my community for life. To say I am leaving with a growth plan that has me excited is an insult. I have all I need in a holistic, dynamic, exponential way that's taking my business to every level of possibility I have imagined, will continue to imagine. If you know you know. I have connection, community, and My experience was invaluable. Anybody that says otherwise….just didn't do it right. It's not meant to be an easy, check the box. It's meant to be a process for a lifetime of growth in economic value, social/community value, and personal value. Stay open, stay curious, stay committed to learning and improving. Let me update you all! Let’s go all the way back to August where I took part in Morgan Stanley’s virtual event series! It was a 5-week programme agenda where I attended weekly webinars covering a number of topics for example The Perspectives of a CEO by the wonderful Clare Woodman. It was an honour to hear from the head of EMEA, but what stuck with me is when she said that “it’s the people at Morgan Stanley that has helped us deliver first class business in a first class way”. To be appreciated in such a way! Clare Woodman also gave us some advice. She said that we need to understand what drives us, and we should focus on skills that are able to influence our career. Another webinar that stood out to me was Week 4 on Acing the Assessment by Amy W.. We were able to listen to a panel of analysts and associates share hints and tips and what stuck with me on this particular webinar was that in the case study, you don’t have to be right or wrong. The examiner is simply trying to see how you think! What was also stressed is that it’s so important to research about Morgan Stanley and see what they actually do, as well as the division you’re applying for!
