Through the first 10 years of being a military spouse, I have learned many lessons. I think it is fair to say that at each base, there has been a major lesson learned. We spent three years living in Las Vegas at Nellis Air Force base. There was a lot happening through this assignment. It was our first official base after my spouse completed medical school, both of our children were born there, and it was where I had my first nursing jobs. The biggest life lesson in Las Vegas was compassion. Working as a hospice nurse for a company that also provided palliative care to children gave me a new understanding of compassion. Compassion is not just a feeling, it's an action. Learning to understand and empathize with others is the first step towards becoming a more compassionate person. Let's take the time to listen to those around us, offer support to those in need, and spread kindness wherever we go. Together, we can make the world a more compassionate and understanding place. Honoring Veterans America’s Veterans have done everything asked of them in their mission to serve our country and it is never too late to give them a hero’s welcome home. Skilled nursing staff may provide the last opportunity for Veterans to feel that their service was not in vain, and that they are appreciated. Simple acts of gratitude at the end-of-life can make up for a lack of appreciation or recognition during the Veteran’s lifetime, especially for those Veterans who were never welcomed home or thanked for their service. For skilled nursing professionals, the following are tips you and your staff can use to engage, honor and recognize the Veterans you serve: Give Veterans an opportunity to tell their stories. Respect Veterans’ service, their feelings, and any suggestions they might offer. Thank Veterans for their service to our country. When approaching Veterans for their participation, consider bringing another Veteran with you. Show appreciation for the families of Veterans. Always be sincere, caring, compassionate and ready and able to listen to what a Veteran or his or her family member has to share about the situation they are dealing with. Be supportive and non-judgmental and always validate their feelings and concerns. Be honest, sincere, caring and respectful. Accept, without judgment, the Veteran as he/she is. It might take longer for some Veterans to trust you. Be patient and listen. Expect the Veteran’s sharing to occur over a period of time. Everyone wants the same things...but there is more than one path to take. A staffing mandate of this magnitude is unrealistic, and if put in place will definitely cause facilities to close across the country. I agree with this senator...how does that protect our most vulnerable? Or worse, will leave operators no choice but to employ those they may not under current circumstances hire, and may lead to worse outcomes for the facilities, and most importantly the residents! "Trusting people to be creative and constructive when given more freedom does not imply an overly optimistic belief in the perfectibility of human nature. It is, rather, belief that the inevitable errors and sins of the human condition are far better overcome by individuals working together in an environment of trust and freedom and mutual respect than by individuals working under a multitude of rules, regulations, and restraints imposed upon them by another group of imperfect individuals."
