Engagement with our teams is one of the most important aspects of our job as leaders, no matter what industry we are in. I have often read - and, found in my own experience to be true - that people perform at a higher level when they feel like a part of the team. When you take the time to recognize and reward, encourage, to be constructive in the feedback you give, and to help them to understand the role they play in the larger machine, the team will feel more valued, appreciated, and dedicated to delivering the best results! Creating a district newsletter for monthly recognition & information is something that I started many years ago, and have since brought with me to several companies along the way. I am all about celebrating the wins, highlighting the opportunities, and making sure that each and every person on my team knows how much they are valued and appreciated. The difference between a manager and a leader can be broken down in a million different molecular ways, but for me it has always been about recognizing and celebrating individuality & understanding that leadership is NOT "one size fits all". Every person on your team brings something unique and different. Why would we want to waste time putting everyone into the same box, when we could instead develop our leadership style to incorporate the brilliant individuality of those around us? Recognize the people who come to work for you every day. Tell them thank you. Let them know that they are seen & heard, and that their contributions to the greater success of your business are valid & immeasurable. I am so grateful for my wonderful boss Jessi Rinehart - when I came to her with the idea to introduce this particular newsletter concept into our district, she received it with open arms! It is so incredible to work for Tommy Hilfiger - a people first organization that takes pride in celebrating those of us who call this company home. Thank you to my fellow managers in our district, for letting me into the day to day life of your stores, providing me with info & photos, and for supporting this journey as we unify as the district to beat! My challenge to each and every person reading this is to find a way to celebrate your team consistently. Whether it's a newsletter, a conversation, a thank you note, or anything in between! Some people really do look down on retail leadership. That's wild to me. You can't possibly know a thing about this type of business if you think that. You're talking about people who have to have an enormous amount of resilience and perseverance to be successful at all. A group of people who deal with every walk of life every single day, only seem happy and encouraged when doing so, deescalate all problems regardless if it has anything to do with them, coach and develop your team while running the store, keep the store running smooth 7 days a week operationally. Handle all issues with grace and compassion and oh yeah, hit your monthly quota in sales. I've also heard retail is great if looking for entry-level positions. Maybe so and I do agree. However, retail is also great at identifying who has a work ethic and who does not. Who pays attention to detail and who does not. Who's selfish and who's not. Who can handle adversity and who cannot. Who's a fighter and who's not. Plain and simply put, who's a winner and who's not. I'm so thankful I went into retail leadership. It's provided hands-on experience in dealing with a diverse range of people and situations, which has fostered personal and professional growth. It's also introduced me to some of the strongest, most resilient people I've ever met. Several that were even in my wedding. Be careful judging talent by title or industry. #Retail #Leadership

THE STORE EXPERIENCE   I had the opportunity to participate in a fire chat with Crate & Barrel CEO, Janet Hayes, at an event promoted by Brookfield Properties.   We discussed the role of physical stores… many believed in a daunting fate.   Not exactly what we have seen happening…   Remove all the noise of recent store closures driven by failed business models – e.g., Bed Bath & Beyond, Tuesday Morning. We woke up one day and were running stores, managing large teams of people, merchandising, and analyzing our KPIs.  We put out fires, change direction, change schedules, take a conference call, and move on. There's little time for thinking, only for doing. Thinking on your feet quickly, making a decision, and moving on is the name of the game.  The corporate office does not afford the office time, payroll, or leadership teams big enough to cover all of our bases. Retail managers are scrappers! Oftentimes the profession is looked down upon or seen as an easy career choice, but customer/client service is one of the most difficult and challenging jobs out there. Someone once said that customer service is far more challenging than rocket science, which is a bold claim (a claim all customer service folks would agree with instantly!) that makes sense in one big way: there is no “manual” for actions to satisfy a client. This person went on to explain that comparison by reminding us that the physics doesn’t change, but every person is unique. The essential nature of the equations to time a launch and escape earth’s gravity don’t vary radically from launch to launch, but there isn’t a single client interaction that is exactly the same as another. This requires alacrity, creativity; endurance…all the qualities we prize in star athletes! To properly help a customer, one must gather the entirety of their collected experience to pick and choose past situations that most closely resemble the one at hand…despite those tools only helping so much when you still need to improvise to satisfy that customer at the end of the day. If you’re in retail, foodservice, etc and you are exhausted at the end of the day, it’s because you burned through so many calories physically and mentally exerting yourself for every moment of your day at work. It isn’t easy, it isn’t for the faint of heart; customer service is for the toughest ones out there.
