Three global bottlenecks in shipping: Red Sea Crisis, Panama Canal drought and Russian invasion of Ukraine. Overall, the UNCTAD found that weekly ship transits through the Suez Canal decreased by an estimated 42% in the last two months. Vessel volume in the canal had fallen to an average of 4.25 vessels per day compared to 15 vessels per day prior to the start of Red Sea attacks, causing Suez Canal transits down 67% year-on-year (Alphaliner, 2024). Trust in the safety of navigation in the region has not yet been restored despite the efforts of Operation Prosperity Guardian - an international military campaign led by the US in response to Houthi-led attacks on shipping. The vast majority of ocean carriers prefer to ‘play it safe’ and redirect vessel traffic to the much longer Cape of Good Hope route. As per 15 January, Alphaliner identified 338 vessels on Cape diversions, including 192 on westbound and 146 on eastbound voyages. Surprisingly, even before the Houthi attacks in the Red Sea, a small number of ships have already been re-routed to the Cape for commercial reasons. Typically, this would happen on poorly booked voyages in times of low demand, when some carriers preferred to trade Suez Canal toll savings against higher bunker costs. Some Far East - USEC services are a special case in this regard. These services typically used the Panama Canal for the longer, more time-sensitive fronthaul, with the Cape or Suez being used as an opportunistic route for the return voyages, depending on a variety of factors such as bunker prices, vessel filling ratios, sailing schedule slack, and others. Accordingly, carriers have increased the speeds of re-routed Cape of Good Hope sailings on the Asia to Europe to make it ‘fast’ enough for ships to arrive exactly one week later than via their original routing. This should work fine as long as the services do not feature any underway calls in the central or east Med. Overall, the good thing is Cape re-routings are not a major headache for shipping on the condition that the carrier does have sufficient capacity to fill the additional schedule slots, created by the diversions, with extra tonnage.
