It's been an eye-opening move from banking into the world of engineering. One of the most interesting observations has been that the thinking behind how to detail the way complex electrical and automation systems work, and how to manage asset information, has rarely been challenged, yet technology has advanced significantly.   The current trend is towards the digitisation of existing processes without consideration of why the processes exist and if they are still even valid in a digital space. This appears to be particularly the case in engineering and asset management. It seems like the only thing more complex than managing an asset itself are the documents, spreadsheets, systems and processes required to describe it!

Actuators are responsible for moving mechanisms in a system. Pneumatic and electric actuators have similar structures, the main difference between them being their power source. Pneumatic actuators derive their power from compressed air pressure while electric actuators rely on electricity to power their functions. To understand the appeal of using electric actuators over their pneumatic counterparts, we need to compare their features.
