As an industry, how can we better measure the direct impact #PrimaryCare has on patient outcomes? Surabhi Bhatt, MS, Ali Khan, MD, MPP, and Rohan Chalasani from our health equity team expand on this question in Fierce Healthcare. They suggest we expand our idea of a "good outcome," looking at things like social risk factor reduction in addition to hospital readmission or lab results. Our team also proposes moving beyond solely measuring acute care and assessing longer-term #PatientOutcomes. Read the full piece: https://bit.ly/48fjYwS

How do we measure primary care impact - or, for that manner, any clinical impact? It's a simple question, but one that, over the past few years, I've struggled to meaningfully answer. In a world where quality measures abound - and critiques of those measures (and measurement burden) from frontline clinicians grow ever louder - it's crucial that we focus our efforts to deliver clinical excellence to all on those measures that really signal superb care delivery. Similarly, as we debate nationally whether tax status and corporate structure impact the quality of the care we deliver in American medicine, having clear benchmarks and standards by which to compare delivery systems becomes all the more necessary. But here's the trick: it's not that those outcomes measures and benchmarks aren't being used - it's that, by and large, they just don't exist. In Fierce Healthcare, our Oak Street Health team, led by our Health Equity Lead Surabhi Bhatt, MS and all-star collaborator Rohan Chalasani (our MD/MBA student at Harvard Business School and Northwestern University - The Feinberg School of Medicine) examines this conundrum - and we call for industry, academia, health systems and patients to come together to solve it. The future of trust in #valuebasedcare and, indeed, all of #healthcare, depends on it. David Buchanan Marisa Rogers MD, MPH Sachin H.
