Staying hydrated can help prevent heat stroke and provide energy. Avoid alcohol the night before. • Take breaks: Schedule frequent breaks to prevent your body from overheating. • Wear protective clothing: Wear light-colored, loose-fitting, breathable clothing made from natural materials like cotton, and avoid synthetic fabrics. Did somebody say heatwave?🔥👋 Don’t forget to protect yourself and your staff working outside in the blazing heat. Here is a heatwave protection checklist: ✅ Hydration - As the temperatures soar, it’s imperative to stay hydrated, especially when doing hard manual labour. Remember to keep water bottles topped up throughout the day so you never run out. ✅ UV protection - Bare skin must be shielded from the sun, particularly during midday, to avoid burns. Covering up with clothing is best, and any exposed skin needs frequent application of sunscreen. ✅ Take breaks - Short breaks every hour prevent heat exhaustion. Heatwaves are no joke, especially in our industry, that is why we have provided tips for our employees to stay cool and safe while working: 1. Stay Hydrated Our bodies are made up of about 60% of water, and maintaining this balance is crucial for our health. This doesn't just mean water - fruits and vegetables can also contribute to your hydration levels. 2. Take Regular Breaks Taking regular breaks allows your body to cool down and prevent overheating, which can lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. 3. Use a Fan This can be especially helpful in humid conditions where sweat evaporation is slower. 4. Always Wear Sunscreen It's important to use a sunscreen with a high SPF (sun protection factor), even on cloudy days, as UV rays can still penetrate through the clouds. 5. Find Shade This is especially important between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun's rays are the strongest. 6. Wear Light Clothing It's also a good idea to wear loose, breathable fabrics, like cotton or linen, as they allow air to circulate and heat to escape from your body. HEAT Lesson One An essential requirement for continued normal body function is that the deep body core temperature be maintained within the acceptable range of about 98.6oF (37oC) ±1.8oF (1oC). To achieve this body temperature equilibrium, a constant exchange of heat between the body and the environment takes place. The environmental exchanges depend on air temperature, humidity, skin temperature, air velocity, evaporation of sweat, radiant temperature and clothing worn. If you are unsure of the Heat Stress Potential that your employees are exposed to, contact EH&S (me) to conduct Heat Stress Monitoring. Individuals at Risk • All individuals who work in hot environments (inside and outside) are at risk of developing heat stress. • More intense and strenuous workloads, put individuals at a greater risk. • Wearing PPE such as respirators and protective suits can also increase this risk.
