One of the many things I like about this presentation is that humans driving a car - like the captain of a ship - have many wider responsibilities that help make the drive safer. It made me wonder whether we should preferring the term “autonomous road driver” or “robo-driver” rather than AV to keep focus on this rounded perspective. It also humanises the challenges. Think about this: There are about 44,000 motor vehicle fatalities per year in the U.S.; Autonomous driving will help reduce them, someday perhaps near zero. But getting to that point will take time. Let's assume they are reduced by 50%. The companies working on autonomous driving will not get 22,000 thank-you notes, but 22,000 lawsuits. How can we avoid innovation to be stopped by a highly litigious society?
