A governing body for your family office is among the most significant factors in decision-making. Your creation of this governance will ensure your office is run efficiently and effectively and has a sharp focus on the organization's future. These members will help define roles and responsibilities for the group, conduct due diligence on everything from accounting to hiring trusted personnel, and help bridge communication gaps between family members and employees. Here are four different types of family office governance we've encountered and helped to create with our clients: 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝. One or two family members (i.e., the matriarch or patriarch usually) make the decisions and take responsibility for the entire family. 𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐛𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝. Families elect 3-6 members to represent the entire business. One acts as chairperson or manager. Formal meetings happen quarterly at the minimum, with regular communication and reporting (including an annual meeting). The board defines the mission and values of the office. 𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐥. Consists of members of various generations acting in an advisory capacity. The council plans formal gatherings, and philanthropic efforts and communicates family and financial information. 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬. Comprised of family members and outside counsel that makes all major decisions with the close consultation of family members. All of these types have their strengths and weaknesses, so it's important to talk with a trusted advisor to find the right one for your family office. #FamilyOffice #ExitPlanningAdvisors

Hospitals and health systems across Minnesota are facing an increasingly urgent financial crisis with 67% losing money this year, in 2023. Chronic underpayments by government payers, Medicaid and Medicare, increasing costs of care supplies- pharmaceuticals and services, and increasing expenses needed to support our caregiver workforce are leading to this crisis. Check out the latest blog post from my HayDay Services partner, Amanda Day, Last week Kimberly and I led a workshop for area police chiefs and other command staff. We spent time talking about what grants can and cannot do and how to build a grants team without a grant professional on staff. We spent a lot of time explaining that competitive grant applications do not happen overnight. The most pressing question we received after the presentation was: what should I do when my program isn’t progressing as planned and I still have grant money to spend? To me, the answer is simple, but I realize if you are new to the profession, that is a worrisome issue. We often assume if even the smallest thing goes wrong the funder will suspend or terminate the grant, take our remaining money, and never want to work with our organization again. If you’ve never experienced this feeling before, or you have and still haven’t resolved the issue, let me be the first to tell you this: NO GRANT EVER GOES RIGHT AND YOUR FUNDER HAS SEEN IT ALL BEFORE.
