Realizing a village without hunger, as well as village consumption and production that is environmentally conscious are two points of the 18 village sustainable development goals (SDGs) that we are jointly striving for, including by the community in Tapiri Village, Teminabuan District, South Sorong Regency, Southwest Papua Province. The people of Kampung Tapiri have been farming with the moving land method. The EcoNusa Foundation through the School of Eco Involvement and School of Social Transformation programs assisted Tapiri Village to start sustainable agriculture. Departing from these activities, the Tapiri village government specifically allocated 20% of village funds for village sustainable agriculture programs. This program is run by five women farmer groups who are directly supervised by the village head, village treasurer, and village PKK head. Some of the food crops planted are sweet corn, chilies, spinach, tomatoes, cucumbers, and taro. In the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas, along the banks of the temperamental Jayanti River, resided the small village of Bhutia Basti. Founded before India’s independence, this community, primarily of Bhutanese descent, faced a unique set of challenges. Living within the core area of Buxa Tiger Reserve meant contending with nature’s fury, particularly the annual floods that cut them off from the outside world. Dolomite mining, their primary livelihood, ceased in 1983 when the area became a wildlife sanctuary. Limited opportunities for sustenance, coupled with constant human-animal conflict, painted a grim picture for Bhutia Basti’s future. Speaking with Indian Masterminds, IFS officer Debashish Sharma, currently posted as the Deputy Field Director of Buxa Tiger Reserve, shared about the whole relocation process that took place to move the villagers to their new homes. Recognizing these hardships, the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) prioritizes relocating villages from core areas to safeguard wildlife habitats. Following these guidelines, the Forest Department reached out to Bhutia Basti’s 78 families. “Fortunately, the villagers understood the ecological importance of their relocation and willingly opted for a new beginning,” Mr. Sharma shared. The NTCA offers two options for relocation: a cash compensation package or resettlement in a designated buffer zone with land, housing, and essential amenities. Bhutia Basti chose the former, receiving a substantial compensation of Rs. 15 lakh per adult (aged 18 and above). This initiative wasn’t solely driven by wildlife conservation. Uplifting the socio-economic conditions of the villagers was equally important. The Alipurduar District Administration provided each beneficiary family with 8 decimals of land patta (land ownership rights) in a non-forest area called BonoChaya Village, a name bestowed by the Chief Minister of West Bengal, meaning ‘Forest Shelter’ or ‘Forest Life’. This approach involves the community in the stewardship of designated forest areas and resources to ensure sustainable livelihoods and realization of forest conservation objectives. This study analyzes the factors influencing gender participation in CFMGs and their integration into #decision_making processes, covering 12 CFMG study sites and 102 member #interviews with a wide range of forest management experience.

Sikkim's government Government of Sikkim recently initiated a program called Mero Rukh Mero Santati (MRMS) conceptualized by Shri Prem Singh Tamang (Golay), the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Sikkim as a part of its plantation drives. Under this program, a goal has been set to plant 100 trees for every newborn baby, making it one of the leading carbon-negative initiatives in the Eastern Himalayas. A beautiful way to celebrate new life while also taking care of our planet. The government of Sikkim is working hard to make sure that this initiative is a success, and parents will receive support from various departments to make sure that the trees are planted and cared for properly. Oil palm intercropping has a big social benefit: more jobs for locals, especially young people and women. This is much better than when oil palm is grown in monoculture system. For example, Anjas from Bengkulu City, Indonesia loves farming but faced problems like not having enough land, capital, technical guidance, and markets. After joining Arconesia, Anjas and many others like him got the help they needed to become professional farmers. We often complain that many young people don't want to become farmers, but sometimes we forget the crucial support needed to motivate them initially. The Useful Banyan Tree - Sadiman, a poor farmer from Bali, Indonesia, realised how serious the water crisis had become in the barren hills of Gendol, which had suffered deforestation and fires between the ‘60s to the ‘80s. To make rubber sap the tree sucks in water from the ground, yet no sap was formed. The lush green forest had turned barren. Sadiman took it upon himself to BE THE CHANGE and for 20 years, he alone planted and looked after the trees that stored underground water. He grew clove tree seedings and traded expensive clove seeds for banyan seeds. People laughed at him for planting ‘useless banyan seeds’. But he knew that these TREES PRODUCE WATER.
