College students: The best lesson you'll receive today: (from someone who works with a lot of y'all) Don't compare yourself to others; instead, compare the NOW you to the FUTURE you. 📌 Focus on your progress, not "their" standards 📌 Celebrate your uniqueness; if you're not "weird" you're not doing it right 📌 Be grateful; "failing" is simply an opportunity to try again Take it from me: I made a habit of comparing myself to others. It was convenient. But, it never served me well! Excelling as a college student goes beyond how you stack up against your peers. It's all about the process of YOU maximizing YOU! #genz #youngprofessionals #collegestudents __________ Share with someone who needs to hear it ♻️

Meet another incredible VEBA Promise Scholar: Jonathan Tyler Hargraves! His story is incredible: "A role model is a person whose behavior is imitated by others. Good role models have personality qualities of self- awareness, positivity, empathy, and integrity. They embody high moral values, and project confidence and perseverance. The role model I have chosen to use for this essay is my older brother, Lawrence because his life exemplifies everything that it means to be a role model. He is hardworking, demonstrates commitment to his goals and invests the time and effort necessary to achieve his success. Now that you know who I have chosen, I want to tell you why. Earlier on in life my big brother showed the ability to thrive in adversity which showed up in his academic achievements, community service involvement, and personal qualities. In his adolescent years, after simultaneously losing our grandmother, being evicted from our home in Oakland, California to relocate to Vallejo, even during this difficult time he persevered, earning a spot on his middle school Dean's List and was an honoree of the Oakland African American Honor Roll Society. In his senior year in high school, he was awarded the 2020 UC Davis Upward Bound Outstanding Student Award, completed a summation of 95 community service hours, completed his first college course, and was featured three times by KTVU News (on virtual learning during the pandemic) all while earning his first 4.0 GPA! He is now a sophomore in college, earning a 3.72 GPA who is on track to dual major in both kinesiology and psychology in Spring 2024! [...] Due to us being less than two years apart, I can give you an eyewitness account of every one of his triumphs as I too was there to witness all his struggles. Though there were times where he undoubtedly wanted to throw his hands up, he knew there was a little brother looking up to him, and I believe that's part of what kept him going. He set the standard for academic and athletic excellence to follow by laying the groundwork for me to not only follow, but to surpass." Finding Passion and Grit as a Second Year College Student: So far, one of my biggest struggles in my college career has been finding passion. Finding passion for what it is I'm doing and learning, especially in a field that requires as much schooling as Psychology, has been very difficult to come by. Back when I was applying for schools, drafting out my college essay, and deciding what major would be a right fit for me, what I really wanted to do was Computer Science. Working with computers and technology is something that I really enjoy. But after hours of researching and talking to my dad who obtained his Computer Science degree, I decided that I didn't want to go for something that required so much patience and determination. I didn't think I was cut out for it. I didn't have any grit. This isn't to say I don't love what I'm doing, because I do. Learning about Psychology and all its processes has been very interesting and I've enjoyed it. However, over the past year I've realized it's not the sole focus of what I want to do. I realized that if I was able to find something that intersects with Psychology that I enjoy, maybe it would spark that passion inside me I've been looking for. So, after hours of exploring other majors and programs my school has to offer, I found out that the University of Delaware offers a Bachelor of the Arts Computer Science degree, which aligns almost perfectly with what I want to do. And because it's not a sciences degree, I will have more space in my schedule to pursue Psychology. Then, I started to worry that I was already too far into my college career to switch/add a path, especially one as rigorous as Computer Science. But after looking at my degree audit for hours and multiple conversations with my dad, I realized that it doesn't matter. All that matters is that I'm studying something that I'm really passionate about, and possibly having to take an extra semester worth of school wasn't going to change that. Now, I'm in a place where I really feel I have the grit, passion, and perseverance to obtain my long-term goals. Since figuring out an academic plan that I am excited for, I have the stamina to stick with my future, day in and day out. I take my first Computer Science course next semester, and I cannot wait to get started. I wanted to share my experience on this platform so any other student who may be going through a similar thing where they don't love what they're doing or are having doubts about the path they're on now knows that they are not alone. And if they fear that they are too far into their college career to change paths, that it's never too late. It's never too late to pursue your passion and chase down your goals. Start living life like a marathon, not a sprint. Attached is an eye-opening TED Talk sent to me by my veteran brother that inspired me to write this post: https://lnkd.in/duqP2Gyh

🌟🎓 From Doubt to Triumph: Celebrating Redemption as a Scholar with High Distinction at The University of Texas at Dallas! 🎓🌟 Reflecting on my journey, I recently had a profound conversation with a classmate who questioned my relentless pursuit of academic excellence amidst the general focus on graduation and job hunting. It took me back to my earlier years, where I wasn't always the brightest student. But arriving in the US for my master's degree, I carried a heavy burden—a sense of redemption for past shortcomings, fueled by the profound investment made in my education and leaving a very stable job and relocating thousands of miles away from my family and friends. For years, I've carried a chip on my shoulder, determined to prove my capabilities. So, when I finally achieved a GPA of 4.0 in my master's degree, the feeling was indescribable. It wasn't just about the grades; it was about reclaiming my potential and silencing the doubts that once haunted me. The joy in my family's eyes brought tears to mine—it was redemption for every stumble and setback in my undergraduate journey. To those who knew me in my undergrad days, this may come as a surprise. They might find it hard to believe that the same person who struggled to be an average student then could be at the top of the class now. But therein lies the beauty of redemption—it's about rising above expectations, defying odds, and rewriting the narrative. Education isn't just about securing a job; it's about reclaiming one's narrative and forging a path toward excellence. I am deeply grateful for the unwavering support of my professors, peers, and family throughout this journey. Here's to embracing redemption, celebrating achievements, and living each day with purpose. "So, to any of us, whatever those things are, whatever it is we look up to, whatever it is we look forward to, and whoever it is we're chasing -- to that I say, 'Amen.' To that I say, 'Alright, alright, alright.'" #Perseverance #utdallas #jsom #hirejsom #Transformation #PersonalGrowth

Looking back, graduating college in 2020 amidst the COVID-19 pandemic was a strange yet formative experience. I spent my final semester learning remotely from my childhood playroom, watching my name flash across the TV screen during the virtual graduation ceremony. While many have opinions on the value of college, I realized early on that it was an unparalleled opportunity. College provided me with a four-year window to step outside my comfort zone, communicate effectively with all types of people, and explore interests I never knew existed. Beyond the textbooks and homework assignments, the most valuable lessons came from building relationships with professors and peers from vastly different backgrounds. Having the courage to ask questions and gain new perspectives was incredibly rewarding. I was fortunate to take advantage of the unique experiences and endless opportunities afforded to me during my time at East Carolina University. Over the next few months, I plan to break down the most relevant life lessons I learned in my four years as an undergrad. If this resonates with you, I'd love to hear your takeaways and lessons learned from your own college experience. Let's start a conversation about how we can make the most of our educational journeys to propel our personal and professional growth. #CollegeGrad #ClassOf2020 #LifeAfterCollege #MyCollegeExperience #ECUAlum #PirateNation #Commencement #TasselWorthTheHassle #RealWorldHereICome#CapsOffToTheFuture #NewGradLife #CareerGoals #JobHunting #PostGradPlans #GotMyDegree #DoneWithSchool #NewChapterBegins #ReadyToAdult #Adulting101 #LevelUnlocked #DegreeEarned #NeverStopsLearning
