Families with children in K-12 spent a projected $519 per child on back-to-school needs last year. For families in low-income neighborhoods, the costs are simply not realistic. Why am I raising money to donate books? Imagine a world where your zip code determines your access to stories, knowledge, and dreams. A staggering 82% of CPS elementary schools lack a functioning library, a basic necessity we often take for granted. The disparity grows as we learn that libraries exist in only 10% of primarily Black schools and 21% in Latinx schools. Now, picture a child's home. In 61% of low-income families, not a single age-appropriate book graces their shelves. Yet, studies show that children growing up in homes with at least twenty books gain an additional three years of schooling compared to their peers from bookless environments. Books are more than just paper and ink. They are windows to new worlds, bridges to immense possibilities, and the keys to unlocking untapped potential. Join me in turning the page on educational inequality. Your donation to Working in the Schools (WITS) can light up countless lives, one book at a time. 1 in 4 children leave primary school unable to read at the expected standard. 25%. Just let that sink in. Being able to read confidently is life changing. Education is the gateway to everything, not just higher education and employment but responding to job advert, understanding an employment contract or credit agreement, reading the small print on medication, just understanding basic travel timetables. So many things many of us take for granted but things that put insurmountable barriers in the way for others. 1 in 7 adults today are functionally illiterate. Adults with poor literacy skills aren't just more likely to be unemployed or in low-paid jobs, there is also a causal link between low levels of literacy and shorter life expectancy, depression and obesity, with some regions having a life expectancy 26years less than literate counterparts. £50 donated this week with The Big Give will double to £100 and will provide 2 children with an entire years support of one-to-one reading through Schoolreaders volunteers. Simple. But life changing. Dig deep if you can. #literacymatters #thebiggive #donate
One in four children leave primary school unable to read to the expected standard. Without reading skills, a child is denied the gateway to learning. They cannot access their secondary education fully and their job and life opportunities will be diminished. That's why Schoolreaders is here to help children learn to read. With 1,000 schools, 2,000 volunteers & 20,000 children reading every single week, we're changing the story of children's literacy. £50 will provide one child with an entire year of one to one reading support in school, and this week that amount can be doubled via The Big Give If you are planning to donate to Schoolreaders this Christmas, please do so between now and December 5th, and your gift will make twice the impact. The Crayon Initiative exemplifies creative thinking by transforming #waste into valuable #resources, reducing environmental impact, and simultaneously supporting children's healing through art, demonstrating innovative problem-solving and resourcefulness. The used and unwanted crayons are melted down and remanufactured into new crayons, which are distributed to children's hospitals across the United States. The initiative helps reduce waste, recycle materials, and provide hospitalized children with creative tools to help brighten their stay and aid in their recovery. By identifying the problem (of unused crayons) and empathizing with stakeholders (children in hospitals), 'the crayon initiative' creatively repurposes resources to address the issue sustainably.
