Could size and shape analysis techniques improve how we size match donor hearts to candidates? Could the system safely overcome traditional body size limitations, allowing a bigger donor pool for pediatric heart candidates? At ATC this year, UNOS data scientist Jonathan Plasencia, Ph.D. is presenting two posters justifying efforts to develop better donor-candidate size matching techniques to make the waitlist more equitable for the country’s smallest candidates. Join us in exploring how these innovations can transform pediatric heart transplantation and potentially save more lives. Visit Jonathan in the Poster Hall today, June 1 and Tuesday, June 4. #ATC2024 #Transplantation #PediatricTransplantation #OrganDonation #HealthcareInnovation

Members of the BRAVEST team are already making headlines in the field of Organ Donation and Transplantation! Read this article in Nature Medicine, written by researchers from the PITOR Paris Institute for Transplantation and Organ Regeneration and colleagues on the development of the Banff Automation System. This represents a major step forward in the field of kidney transplantation, providing physicians with a powerful tool to improve diagnosis consistency and patient outcomes. Professor Alexandre Loupy, the senior author of the study, said "We're excited about the potential of #AI to improve medical diagnostics and patient outcomes in a variety of fields beyond kidney transplantation." Due to medical advancements, improved protocols for organ preservation and increased awareness, donation after circulatory death (DCD) has emerged as a valuable pathway for organ donation. DCD has also increased the number of organs available for transplantation and thus has helped reduce the number of patients who are waiting. In this blog, Stephanie Osier, a transplant donor coordinator, demystifies DCD by exploring the process, benefits and ethical considerations.

Acute cellular rejection (ACR) can often occur in lung transplant patients within the first year of transplantation, causing significant decline in allograft function if left untreated. Our research in lung transplant health uses noninvasive technology as a more specific and reliable approach for detecting ACR. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eBAjr4-d

Some exciting #spatialbiology news to end the year with: The Pathomics team had the privilege of working with the dynamic team of kidney #pathologist Dr. Priya Alexander and #transplant surgeon Dr. Timucin Taner, amongst many other collaborators, in putting together this American Journal of Transplantation manuscript, which is finally out on pubmed https://lnkd.in/gS-xQiDg (and direct link below) Our contribution was to build an analytical infrastructure able to perform large-scale image analysis: 247 images containing over 900,000 cells, each with over 2400 intensity and spatial features. Our #imagingmasscytometry analytical workflow combined both "Pathologist in the loop" #supervised cell #classification with #unsupervised #dimensionalityreduction and #clustering methods to interrogate #immune infiltration during the process of #kidney #transplantrejection, highlighting critical biological features of this important disease process. We trained a #tissueclassifier based on pathologist annotations to identify tissue regions, and with all that data develop a #machinelearning predictive classifier that could predict the cause of transplant rejection based on the combination of cell types identified and spatial features present in the dataset. Interestingly, we found that the spatial context was much more important factor towards disease classification prediction than biomarker expression alone, indicating the importance of proper #spatialbiology analysis that factors spatial localization into the analysis. We are immensely proud of the group effort that brought this paper to successful publication, and look forward to more exciting work with the Mayo team in the future. If you are struggling with #quantitative #imageanalysis of #multiplex #immunofluorescence, #imagingmasscytometry , or other #spatialbiology data like #spatialtranscriptomics and other "spatial-omics" datasets, please reach out as we welcome the chance to apply our expertise towards helping you with your #dataanalytics .

Check out "The Development of Clinical Research and Application of HIFU Treatment for Breast Fibroadenoma. " presented by Dr Zhang Cai. In the discussion session, the participating guests had a lively discussion on the relevant hot issues in the breast field. Professor Wang Shui finally concluded and mentioned that every one jointly believes that focused ultrasound has broad application prospects in the treatment of benign and malignant breast tumors. In the future, after forming expert consensuses and guidelines through rigorous clinical research, this non-invasive treatment method will become the preferred choice for breast-conserving treatment of breast cancer. It is also hoped that more experts and scholars at home and abroad will participate in this aspect of research, continuously improve the clinical plan, and expand the clinical application of this technology in other breast diseases to benefit more patients.
