💙💚 As OPOs are planning their content for 2024, we can help capture the stories of their donors and transplant recipients to educate and inspire their communities about the gift of life. These stories can be shared with hospitals, funeral home directors, medical examiners, active donor family cases, schools, BMVs and more. More than 230 children in the UK urgently need a life-saving organ transplant. In 2021/22, just 52% of families who were approached about organ donation gave consent for their child’s organs to be donated. This represented just 40 organ donors under the age of 18. To be be able to save more lives of children, both today and in the future, we need more young people, and their families, to confirm their support for organ donation on the NHS Organ Donor Register. When organ donation becomes a possibility, it is often in very sudden or unexpected circumstances. When families have already had the opportunity to consider organ donation previously or know already it is something they support, it makes a difficult situation that bit easier. Please consider registering. https://lnkd.in/erbKDx_k

Did you know that April is National Donate Life Month? 💙 💚 💙 💚 Every nine minutes, someone is added to the transplant waiting list, while more than 100,000 people in the US are in need for a transplant. In Texas, there is a greater need for organ donation among communities of color, with more than 40% of people on the transplant waiting list being Hispanic. Organ donation can be a sensitive topic, but it's crucial to realize the immense impact your decision can have on others. By registering as an organ donor, you can help address the scarcity of organs and be a hero to those in need of life-saving transplants. Your selfless act can save up to eight lives. Don't wait to make your wishes known to your family members. Time is of the essence, and coordination between the donor's family, hospital staff, and organ specialists is essential to manage the entire process. Today, we commemorate #DonateLife Blue and Green Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about tissue and organ donation. As we reflect on this day, two crucial issues come to light regarding transplant care. First, it’s critical to acknowledge the pivotal role that caregivers play through every step of the process. Most living donations occur within families, increasing the likelihood of the donor becoming a caregiver to the recipient. Second, it's imperative to address the inequities families of color face to access the waitlist, find a suitable match, and navigate the donation process. Read NAC's Transplant Caregiving in the U.S Report to learn about how family caregivers are unrecognized, unprepared and under-resourced, and the urgent need to increase support services in the transplant system. https://lnkd.in/ePBVe8mv #BlueandGreenDay #TransplantCare

Day 10 📅 The countdown begins! Only 10 days left until our Snowdon hike for Split - Children's Liver Fund. Let's come together to make a difference. Every contribution counts! We are proud to of our fundraising efforts for Split - Children's Liver Fund. This charity plays a crucial role in supporting children with liver disease, especially during their lengthy hospital stays. 🔹 Current Progress We've raised £3,306 out of our £3,500 target, thanks to the generosity of 142 supporters. 🔹 Why Split- Children's Liver Fund? 1 in 1,000 children born in the UK develop liver disease. With advances in medical science, we can save these young lives. However, the journey is not easy. With only three transplant centres in the UK, children often have to travel long distances, causing financial and emotional strain on families. SPLIT steps in by: ✅ Providing financial support and crisis grants. ✅ Offering information and education for families and the public. ✅ Conducting research into liver disease causes and treatments. Every donation, big or small, makes a difference. Let's come together to reach our target and support this noble cause. Click here to learn more https://lnkd.in/eGBGB7cU #chairty #fundrasing

April is National Donate Life Month. Established in 2003 by Donate Life America and its partnering organizations, National Donate Life Month helps raise awareness about donation, encourages Americans to register as organ, eye, and tissue donors and honors those who have saved lives through the gift of donation. The number of patients waiting for organs changes every day. As of March 2024, the number of patients on the national transplant waiting list was more than 103,000, and every ten minutes, another person is added to the list. In fact, the number of patients who need a lifesaving transplant goes up faster than the number of available organs. By saying "yes" to being an organ donor, you are giving more hope for patients on the waiting list! We will be sharing more helpful information and statistics through the month of April and beyond. If you are interested in saving lives by becoming an organ donor, visit https://lnkd.in/eHwJr7c6 for answers to common questions and more. #DonateLifeMonth #DonorsAreSuperstars #STBHChicago

*Spina Bifida Awareness* Did you know that spina bifida is a birth defect? It's something that you are born with, not something that develops over time or as a result of any kind of incident. There are 3 main types of spina bifida: Spina Bifida Occulta, sometimes called "hidden" spina bifida, is the mildest form. There can be a small gap in the spine, but no opening or sac on the back. This form of spina bifida typically does not cause any disabilities. Meningocele (ma-nin-jo-seal) is when a sac of fluid comes through an opening on the back; however the spinal cord is not in the sac. As a result there is typically little or no nerve damage and only minor disabilities. Myelomeningocele (my-low-ma-nin-jo-seal) is the most severe form on spina bifida. This was the type of spina bifida that my daughter was diagnosed with. In this case, there is a sac of fluid that comes through an opening on the baby's back and the spinal cord and nerves are pulled into the sac. As a result, there the spinal cord becomes damaged while the baby develops in the womb. This form can result in moderate to severe disabilities, depending on the size and location of the opening on the spine. This month, as we work to spread awareness about spina bifida, we are also raising money for the Spina Bifida Association, which works to support individuals living with spina bifida through research and advocacy.
