This National Brother's Day, we’re tipping our hats to Grant and Tom McCargo—brothers and the dynamic co-founders of Urban Villages—whose yin-yang synergy powers through every boardroom with a blend of honesty, openness, and a sprinkle of sibling rivalry. Tom, the "younger and wiser" of the two, brings a fresh, strategic vision that often leads to good-natured ribbing about who’s really the brains of the operation. Meanwhile, Grant, our entrepreneurial maverick, steers the ship with bold ideas and a "long view" that might make you wonder if he’s secretly the younger one! Their rapport is legendary: “It’s rare to find two brothers who are so different yet hold such deep respect for each other's viewpoints.” Grant, the instigator, and Tom, the voice of reason, complement each other perfectly. Grant provides the bold ideas and entrepreneurial spirit, while Tom brings a wealth of strategic insight and wisdom, despite being younger. When it comes to disagreements, they rarely clash but rather challenge each other to quickly find the best way to execute decisions. Their collaboration is always a blend of respect, brotherly love, and a lot of fun! We're very lucky to have these two visionary brothers leading the way! #UrbanVillages

We have recently brought together a dynamic group of investors for an incredible initiative called Reimagining Opportunities for Investment (ROI) in the South. The focus: creating a sustainable investment ecosystem for undercapitalized communities of color in the Deep South. 📍 A special stop on this journey was the vibrant city of New Orleans, rich in history and culture. Investors delved into its unique blend of African, Native American, Latinx, Asian American and European influences, understanding the need for a collaborative approach to avoid repeating historical disparities. New Orleans is not just a city; it's a hub of entrepreneurial talent and opportunity. However, it faces lingering inequalities. While businesses owned by people of color are on the rise, they receive only 2% of the city's receipts. This inequity underscores the urgent need for collaborative and inclusive investments. The ROI in the South session highlighted key insights from local leaders like Christy Slater, Lamar Gardere and Judy Reese Morse. Their perspectives emphasized the necessity of inclusive economies and nurturing entrepreneurs of color. Looking ahead, ROI in the South will explore sectors like reentry and agriculture, offering more avenues for transformative investments. Key takeaways for investors include the importance of playing the long game, leveraging community strengths and fostering inclusive growth. Learn more here: https://wkkf.co/kflg

"I KNOW THIS PLACE!" 📍 Boston, Massachusettes With its diverse population and rich cultural heritage, Boston offers a wide range of cultural experiences. You can explore the Italian-American culture in the North End, savor authentic Chinese cuisine in Chinatown, or enjoy live Irish music in South Boston. The city's neighborhoods are vibrant and unique, each offering its own atmosphere and character. Standing beside the Old State House in Boston, Massachusetts, one can't help but be awestruck by the more than two and a half centuries of history that have unfolded here. This historic structure has borne witness to a remarkable journey through time. The statues adorning its pinnacle, a unicorn, and a lion, carry profound symbolism that echoes the narrative of this venerable edifice. They serve as powerful symbols, encapsulating the essence of the building's storied past. The lion and the unicorn represent contrasting aspects of this history. The lion embodies the ferocity of fierce disagreements, conflicts, and even massacres that raged on, much like the tenacity of a lion, all in pursuit of lofty dreams symbolized by the unicorn. These dreams, much like the elusive nature of a unicorn, often seemed unattainable. Yet, despite the odds, those who embodied the lion's spirit persevered, tirelessly striving for the seemingly unattainable unicorn—freedom and independence. This building stood as an unwavering witness to everything, from the tumultuous battles to the ultimate triumph of independence. It has endured, a testament to the indomitable human spirit and the pursuit of the most extraordinary dreams. A lot of you guessed this right! It's a pretty popular city, indeed. #guessinggame #minigame #boston #massachusetts #oldstatehouse #prevailingwage #wagedetermination #wagesandsalaries #wageandhour #constructionaccounting #accountingservices #businessconsultingservices #payrollservices

As they say - Location, Location, Location! Entrepreneur Phil Levin on the importance of neighborhoods: "You are going to spend 1000x more time in your surrounding 5 blocks than you will in any other neighborhood in your city. Thinking about all the things that New York City has—or the next city has—is a lot less important than thinking about the things within the five blocks where you live. Most neighborhoods in your city you might never step foot in. They might as well be in the other side of the country. But the things in your immediate vicinity are the things that are going to dominate your life. So picking and influencing your neighborhood is really important... the neighborhood determines quite a bit about our life and our happiness." The Conversation that Derailed a Real Estate Empire ❌ The Bentall name is synonymous with Vancouver real estate. It was once a successful family business. But this isn’t the case anymore. The Bentall Centre, the centre of Vancouver’s downtown, is owned by Hudson Pacific. --- David Bentall was a young man with big dreams. He wanted to get ready to take over the family business. To follow in his Dad’s footsteps. So, he sat his Dad and Uncle Bob down to lay out his own development plan. Uncle Bob was 55 and was President. David’s plan was to take that position in 10 years. Uncle Bob was not pleased. David thought he was taking initiative and planning for leadership. Uncle Bob thought David was plotting his departure. David wanted to be ready in 10 years. Uncle Bob thought it would take at least 20. The conversation quickly went sideways. And a once warm relationship, soured. The rest is history. Later, both David and his Dad were fired from the company. --- Conversations don’t always go as intended. Even with the best intentions, interpretations can be wildly different. --- This could have gone differently. David reflects now that if only he had chosen humility and empathy. Instead of an argument it could have been a collaboration. And instead of a tragedy, it could have been a feel-good story. ____ I'm Tim Yeung Click my name + follow. ____ WORK WITH ME I help families plan for the next generation and create a brighter future. I really want to see business models where commercial building owners or even cities, invest into companies that they see have a unique idea that will contribute to the fabric of the city and then give them below market rent prices(their actual cost +5%) so that the business has the financial room to innovate and grow. The surrounding businesses and the city ultimately benefit. My favorite spot in Santa Cruz is Bad Animal Books. I bring people there all the time and it becomes their favorite spot. Then we go to The Red Room after or for ice cream. It’s a fun night out and we spend $$. BA is a unique business that would only benefit from having a bit more financial freedom. I’m all for freemarket capitalism. But if one of the tenants of it is - the best ideas will rise to the top. We need to have systems in place that actually facilitate that rise. America claims to be a meritocracy. We aren’t. Let’s get back to that.
