Imagine a world ravaged by conflict, where the lines between civilian and combatant blur. The wounded lie unattended, prisoners vanish into nightmarish dungeons, and families are torn apart with no hope of reunion. This is the chilling reality that awaits in a world without the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
The ICRC, a beacon of hope in the darkest hours, wouldn't be there to:
Protect civilians: Without neutral intervention, civilians become mere pawns in war games. The Geneva Conventions, championed by the ICRC, would be ignored, leading to indiscriminate attacks and massacres.
Aid the wounded: Battlefield medics would struggle to treat the overwhelming number of casualties. Medical supplies, often facilitated by the ICRC, would be scarce, leaving the injured to succumb to preventable infections.
Reunite families: The ICRC's messaging services, a lifeline for separated families, would cease to exist. The anguish of not knowing if loved ones are alive would be a constant torment.
Hold warring parties accountable: The ICRC's role in documenting war crimes would be absent. Without this impartial record, perpetrators would act with impunity, emboldening further atrocities.
The ripple effects would be catastrophic. Displaced populations, denied basic necessities, would face starvation and disease. Mental health issues would skyrocket as people grapple with unimaginable trauma.
A Call to Action
The ICRC's work is far from over. Conflicts rage on, and the need for their unwavering neutrality and dedication is ever-present. This thought experiment serves as a stark reminder: We cannot afford a world without the ICRC.
Let us strive for a future where the ICRC's work becomes obsolete, not through its absence, but through the eradication of armed conflict.

1wLina Ayesh if you know anyone who is suitable. I feel terrible that I can’t tag individual people because I don’t know what is their current situation… my heart can’t take it if I message and they don’t respond. So, I’ll just tag you and Asmaa Haidara if you don’t mind. Seeing a lot of vacancies for UNRWA 💕
