As veterans continue to face challenges, a debate has arisen over whether the US Army and military leadership have done them wrong by naming Ft. Hood after General Cavazos instead of Roy Benavidez, the real-life Rambo who earned the honor. While Cavazos was a great general and symbolized Hispanic representation in the Army, Benavidez is the true embodiment of Army values. Despite being hispanic Benavidez overcame everything at a time it was unheard of, to be a Hispanic MSG in the US Army Special Forces, and earn the Medal of Honor What do you think? Would be great to get thoughts about the current situation WRT SF’s value proposition and the current situation with respect to recruiting and force fill.

I think this is an important paper that anyone who cares about our military and our nation should read. Some of my thoughts: 1. I completely agree with the Culture Shift of Mission Command and "disciplined disobedience." Easy to say - tough to do but we have to embrace it. 2. Agree on all points of technology and the need to operate routinely dispersed, disconnected, and in multi-domain including commercial. 3. The idea of a move towards partial conscription is interesting but I think unworkable. It is not the American Way of War to have a large standing Army and even when we had conscription it was short. Even FDR on the eve of Pearl Harbor would not have been able to get support for the draft and today there is no support. So what do we do? I would have liked to see an embracing of Coalition/Allies. America's super power is that we have friends and our threat does not.

To understand the rank of Fleet Admiral, one needs to consider the context of World War II. The United States was working alongside Allies who had higher ranks like Field Marshals and Fleet Admirals, which were superior to American ranks. To ensure American senior officers were not outranked, the United States established the ranks of Fleet Admiral and General of the Army, both five-star ranks. In total, nine men held these ranks. For the Navy, they were Nimitz, Halsey, King, and Leahy. In the Army, the five-star generals were Arnold, Eisenhower, Marshall, MacArthur, and Bradley.

As we commemorate Women's History Month, it is fitting to spotlight remarkable women who defied societal norms of their time and shattered barriers in pursuing military ambitions. There is the story of the US Army soldier, Cathay Williams, the only known female Buffalo Soldier. Then there is U.S. Army Gen. Ann Dunwoody, the first female four-star general. And there is Chief Master Sgt. JoAnne Bass, the first female Chief Master Sergeant of the United States Air Force. Through their extraordinary stories, we glimpse not only the struggles faced by women in traditionally male-dominated fields but also the triumph of the human spirit in the face of adversity. But once we commemorate “the firsts,” where do we go from here? How do I, a senior leader build and continue the work for the future? Lithium-sulfur chemistry will be the next major advancement in rechargeable battery technology. They are significantly lighter than lithium-ion batteries while delivering comparable energy. It is nice to be involved in doing that! What intrigues me even more is the potential to manufacture these cells using only local raw materials. Sometimes, that feature is more important than performance alone.

True leadership is thinking of more than just a promotion or getting up the corporate ladder.

To be clear… The message here is not, “me first,” but “Don’t forget yourself!” We funnel ourselves into the machine and often lack self-care and awareness. Because of this we often find an environment that lacks compassion, empathy, and togetherness. An environment that evolves around results and false images. Instead of fostering a toxic environment due to self-induced despair, build a space for connectedness. Running behind promotion and money is okay, but what is all the status and money and no peace for self, or memories of how you got to the results? As a leader, I’d rather my troops find peace in their personal life that resonates with their work, which builds a stronger bond in the daily experiences of each other than being lost in the “high stakes” of results and losing the ones to their left and right. Strength isn’t all bronze, being well-rounded is the optimal solution to overall success.
