I think this is an important paper that anyone who cares about our military and our nation should read. Some of my thoughts: 1. I completely agree with the Culture Shift of Mission Command and "disciplined disobedience." Easy to say - tough to do but we have to embrace it. 2. Agree on all points of technology and the need to operate routinely dispersed, disconnected, and in multi-domain including commercial. 3. The idea of a move towards partial conscription is interesting but I think unworkable. It is not the American Way of War to have a large standing Army and even when we had conscription it was short. Even FDR on the eve of Pearl Harbor would not have been able to get support for the draft and today there is no support. So what do we do? I would have liked to see an embracing of Coalition/Allies. America's super power is that we have friends and our threat does not.

This is leadership, Mission and Installation Contracting Command. Contracting is not simply another job. Contracting is a mission. For all my fellow veterans out there, you know how important the mission is. Above all, we serve the Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen, Coast Guardsmen, and Guardians. There are many competing interests in the world of contracting, but one interest should always be at the forefront and guide all decision-making: the service members. Col. Adams exemplifies true leadership by putting them first. Supporting the mission and resourcing our service members is what contracting is all about. As an ol’ former Army Infantry Captain now at Camp Lejeune supporting the Marine Corps contracting mission, I am proud to see that the Army has its priorities exactly where they need to be. #contracting #governmentcontracting #leadership

PKSOI's Director COL Liddick and Mr. Travis Bolio recently joined several Army leaders to write an article that is now published in the Military Review: BG Matt Metzel, (Deputy Commanding General (Operations), 200th Military Police Command); COL Heiva Kelly (Director, Strategic Initiatives Group, US Army Reserve); and LTC(P) Rob Greiner (Strategist, TRANSCOM JECC). This writing expands on FM 3-0 by further defining the meaning and subsequent value that consolidation of gains provides to the Army and the Joint Force. It begins by defining the purpose for consolidating gains and then briefly describes how the term has been modified over time while maintaining a place of prominence within the Army’s mission. The article applies examples from doctrine and recent experience to demonstrate the utility of consolidating gains in preparation for deterring and winning war. Finally, this writing identifies the risk incurred should gains be poorly consolidated and concludes by offering tools and approaches for future consideration. There are two pillars in nation building. One pillar is men and the second pillar is women. When both pillars are strongly placed then the structure of the country is most stable.

On April 23, 1908, Congress created the Medial Reserve Corps, the official predecessor of the Army Reserve. Following World War I, under the National Defense Act of 1920, Congress reorganized the United States land forces by authorizing a Regular Army, a National Guard, and an Organized Reserve (Officer Reserve Corps and Enlisted Reserve Corps) of thirty-five divisions, which later became the Army Reserve. This provided a peacetime pool of trained Reserve officers and enlisted men for use in war. The Army Reserve Corps of Medical Officers was created with 160 physicians; 116 years later, there are more than 200,000 Reservists in more than 148 fields that may be called to action when their country requires their service. #Happybirthday #armyreserves #NICoE #DefenseIntrepidNetwork #DIN

Would be great to get thoughts about the current situation WRT SF’s value proposition and the current situation with respect to recruiting and force fill.

For a student of tactics, battlefield visits highlight to an observer the factors that separate successful and disastrous outcomes. A visit to the former battlefield at Long Tan is very worthwhile. It brings the difficulties of fighting a sub-unit battle into focus, considering the disadvantageous ground and disrupted command, control and communications. Without the plantation trees, there is almost no cover, very little appreciable dead ground. Without the interdiction and protective fire provided by the supporting artillery during the battle, the outcome would likely have been very different. From a logistics perspective, ammunition availability was a significant limitation and without the very risky re-supply operations undertaken by helicopter, D Coy would have exhausted their stocks. The expenditure of artillery ammunition far exceeded planned rates, even at the higher end. Factors such as the weather and time of day also played their part in influencing the outcome. The effect becomes easier to visualise when you see the ground. I think it's important to thank the government of Vietnam for permitting the Long Tan memorial's continued presence and allowing Australians to visit and remember their dead. Its important to remember that there were many Vietnamese killed during the battle and that their families grieve too. Read the history.
