For four years, Vanessa Artis and her two adult children slept on the sidewalks of Parramore. Their fortunes changed last year thanks to the Christian Service Center and a federal grant that has significantly reduced homelessness in the neighborhood. The Artis family was first placed in an extended-stay hotel and then moved to an apartment in Sanford. The $617,000 federal grant, creatively utilized by the Center and the city of Orlando, has lifted 257 people out of homelessness in its first year. The city plans to continue the program with additional federal funding. Despite these efforts, unsheltered homelessness in Orlando has increased by 75% over the past five years, highlighting the urgent need for affordable housing solutions. Mike Johnston Sir, this is your first post about Veterans since assuming command as Mayor of Denver. While your attention to the issue is appreciated, it regrettably fails to highlight the resilience and greatness of our Veterans, instead focusing on a plight I know all too well. Unsolicited Advice: Scrap the 2024 & 30 day deadlines. Focus on winning hearts and minds in the first six months, not the metrics. Veterans are not a $100 million problem; we are an untapped asset in every community across America. We want to help but understand that making such bold promises will earn you the opposite of respect. ✔ Empathy and understanding must be the cornerstones of your mission.  While you're not a Veteran, I believe you can understand us, if you try. Your book proves it. Be the civilian politician we can rally behind - it'll set you apart from the others. I am entrenched in the daily struggles of Colorado's homeless Veterans. If you're committed, you have my full support. There's room for improvement, but no way to worsen the situation. ✔ I have supported your Golden Triangle GNA efforts, and now I ask you to support mine. Save us from more instances of political lip service or the insights of detached academics. We are painfully aware of the challenges; now, action is needed. I'm hopeful you have the solution. When you understand that you cannot save every homeless Veteran - then you'll understand the U.S. Veteran and the depth of mission mindset. It cannot be unprogrammed, homeless or not. ✔ What we require is understanding, a platform to share our stories, and solutions to our challenges. It's that simple. I know all about your Veteran Homeless Program, for I have been through it; it's wanting. Mike - If you're going to get in this fight, then fight. In the Twin Cities, two noteworthy projects, the MACV Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans and Avivo Build Projects, through Lennar and Housing First Minnesota Foundation, have brought hope and transformation to the community. The goal is to impact the lives of those affected by homelessness significantly. Currently, 250 veterans are registered as homeless. To address this issue, 15 homes have been constructed so far, aiding in transitioning individuals out of homelessness. Looking ahead to 2025, the plan is to establish a campus comprising alternative dwelling units (ADUs). The envisioned campus could accommodate up to 30 ADUs, substantially contributing to the fight against homelessness. https://lnkd.in/g_v3sUFD

Veterans are 50% more vulnerable to homelessness than people who have never enlisted. This is an insightful article and worth a read. Improving the processes between the VA, HUD and local housing agencies as well as dialogue with landlords to prevent evictions in the first place will go a long way to solve this crisis. This week, we celebrate our nation's independence. It's a great time to learn about and engage in the local legislative process at the County level! Here's what's on the agenda: ✅ Rules & Operations Committee on Monday at 10A: Regular business, including setting the agendas and meeting schedules for the following week. ✅ Study Session on Monday at 11A: Briefing on a Washington Military Department – Extreme Weather Response Grant – from the Department of Emergency Management and regular business, including review of Committee agendas for the week and discussion of any amendments. ✅ Health & Human Services Committee on Tuesday at 9:30A: Community Development Corporation Expansion Update and Healthcare Authority State Updates. ✅ Study Session on Tuesday at 12P: Regular business, including discussion of boards and commissions, review of the Council agenda, and updates on Council Communications activities. ✅ Council Meeting on Tuesday at 3P: Final action on Proposal R2024-172s, a resolution that, if adopted, approves the 2024-2025 Homeless Housing Program Funding Recommendations.
