My team at PXP Sustainability had the opportunity to work with the social enterprise Evergreen Labs to do a #lifecycleassessment study of Glassia Water's reuse/refill drinking water business in #Vietnam. The purpose was to help the company actually measure its environmental performance against other single-use water packaging options across multiple impact categories (yes, we went beyond greenhouse gas emissions). As someone who is frequently involved in LCAs of reuse/refill versus single-use items, this was quite an interesting experience. Most LCA studies of reusable glass bottles show that glass bottles have higher environmental impacts compared to other packaging materials due to the high energy and resource inputs of glass production, transportation, and limited reuse (even with glass recycling considered). However, the case of Glassia showed the opposite trends and had a strong environmental performance. This was largely due to the way the business model was designed and implemented which resulted in high frequency of reuse/circularity of each bottle. Glassia Water: Unveiling the Environmental Benefits of Reusable Glass Bottles (and Why Reuse Wins!) Exciting news! We're thrilled to announce the results of our new Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study conducted in partnership with PXP Sustainability, a leader in sustainability consulting. This study goes beyond material selection to reveal a surprising truth: simply switching to single-use glass isn't the answer! In fact, our LCA found it has the highest environmental impact of all options. Glassia's commitment to sustainability is multi-pronged. We focus on extensive reuse through a streamlined bottling system, maximizing our glass bottles' lifespan and significantly outperforming single-use PET bottles in ALL environmental impact categories! This means less waste, lower energy use, and a smaller contribution to climate change. Unlike traditional models, we take complete ownership of the reuse cycle, managing distribution and collection for a seamless process. Here at AST, we are committed to the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) and the 2025 Packaging targets, and these commitments have given us direction and a framework for our sustainability goals. Working with APCO’s guidelines has allowed us to take significant strides in ensuring our packaging is sustainable, reducing unnecessary waste, and promoting environment-friendly solutions. These guidelines are a roadmap for us to ensure that our operational practices avoid causing negative impacts on the environment but contribute positively. But our commitment goes beyond just adherence to guidelines and standards. We want to be leaders in the sustainability field. Not because it’s a trend but because we genuinely believe in its importance. To date, more than 20 of our Aspect SKUs have been transitioned to feature either Ocean Waste Plastic (OWP) or recycled materials.
