This post is a bit overdue (I took an Indigenous Consultation & Engagement course in late November), but the lessons learned remain strong in my mind—and heart!
Reflecting on it still, one of the key takeaways: We can't advance common goals or solve problems without meaningful relationships. It isn't simply about "stakeholder management" or even "customer service." Business is not just about transactions (what's in it for me?) but about connection. We "do business" by connecting with people in meaningful ways.
Whatever the relationship, we have much to learn from Indigenous protocols and perspectives about respect, deep listening, vulnerability, and how to build understanding—the foundations of strong relationships. And we should think about the need for relationship first, before we bring an agenda.
As the facilitator noted, being respected—and respectful—is more important than being liked. And as soon as we act from a place of respect, we engage the heart, rather than the ego and the mind that are so good at being self-serving and willing to charm at whatever cost.
Thank you Bob and Flavio for an incredibly rich session with Indigenous Corporate Training Inc. Some great insights to carry through to the next year.
