WHO ARE YOU? Often times, when we are asked this question, we reflexively answer by introducing ourselves with our name. This is how we were thought at home, so it's normal to do this without thinking twice. No doubt about the fact that our name is our identity, but is that what the person asking wants to know? In a platform like LinkedIn for example, your name is always displayed and that's why it is unnecessary to introduce yourself with it. Now, instead of your name, why not tell us what you do? Tell me you're a Social media manager, a nurse, a Copywriter, Play writer, etc. This is the right way to do it. The thing is although we already know what you do, majority, especially interested clients will want to confirm your services. But heyyy, don't forget that it's called personal brand for a reason. It has to be YOU not them. Your voice, Your strategy, Your signature not theirs. You, You, You. So instead of copying them black and white, pick what you can then re-brand to fit you. Don't forget that when you copy them black white, nobody see you,but when you start building you, eventually you will be seen. I’m a dedicated list maker. Many of the 227 files in my iPhone’s Notes app are lists of favorite movies I’ve seen this year, hikes I want to hike, books I keep meaning to read… I sometimes share such rosters on social media while keeping the more serious lists to myself. But some people I admire have recently encouraged me to do a better job at tooting my own professional horn. So I wanted to reflect on 10 career highlights from 2023, in no particular order: 1. Launched “The Compost,” Southern California New Group’s first climate newsletter. Subscribers keep going up, engagement is solid and one reader told me my newsletter is “the only one I save and read from top to bottom.” 2. Taught my first semester of university-level journalism at Chapman. Developing curriculum, delivering lectures, facilitating discussions and giving students feedback was rewarding. And I got good feedback myself, with students saying my classes were “very engaging” and one saying he “grew a lot as a writer.” 3. Placed in the largest circulation categories for three California Journalism Awards. That included second place in the education category and third-place finishes for election and agriculture coverage. 4. Supported our SCNG Guild in an effort to make this job more sustainable for current and future reporters, which means better coverage of local communities. I spent half the year on our bargaining committee and joined a one-day strike in hopes of getting our company to the table with a fair contract. 5. Won six Orange County Press Club awards, including first-place finishes for beat coverage of the environment, best travel story and best use of data. I also took second for public affairs and best use of data (beat myself there!) and got an honorable mention for The Real OC Award. 6. Invited to do several radio interviews about my coverage, including speaking to the NPR affiliate station KCRW about the historic blimp hangar that caught fire in Tustin. 7. Conceptualized, pitched, reported, wrote and promoted 118 stories. Most of those stories ran on the front pages of our SCNG newspapers. Online, they scored high for reader engagement and for attracting new readers from Google searches. 8. Had many of those stories picked up by other news outlets, including the Associated Press, The Seattle Times and The Mercury News. My stories also were featured in other prominent newsletters, including the Los Angeles Times’ “Boiling Point.” And my coverage was cited in scientific research papers. 9. Designed, built and published the website below, brookestaggs.com, to promote my professional work, from journalism to published books to content for my growing social media accounts. 10. Asked to mentor younger and aspiring reporters. Got to share some wisdom from my more than 16 years as a journalist and learned from them along the way.
