In some breaking news from one of our Vespertec partners, VAST Data has now introduced a new data computing platform, conveniently named the “VAST Data Platform”. This new platform has been designed to form the foundation of “AI-assisted discovery”, built from the ground up for AI with unifying storage, database, and virtualized compute engine services. Much like with other VAST solutions this is a scalable system and represents another innovative step forward in AI storage and infrastructure. AI-assisted discovery is a very different concept from the LLMs (large language models) still dominating the headlines. Instead, this concerns using AI to solve problems through deep learning, like tackling the climate crisis or searching for cures to diseases. It’s still very much a next-generation use case rather than a present reality, but VAST is hoping the VAST Data Platform can form a foundation for this potential future. At the core of the AI conundrum, is how we manage the speed of the advancements around us. Go too fast, society won’t have time to adjust to the new scenario and it can be really complicated. Go slower than others, and not only big companies can lose its power, but the entire geopolitical map may be redesigned (and the consequences of going too fast may come anyway). Fact is the chain reaction has started and there’s not much we can do to stop it. We can only manage it to lead it to the best positive consequences, and the least damaging ones too. This article by Google’s former CEO Eric Schmidt at MIT Tech Review brings an important side of discussion as it advocates for an Apollo program for AI. I won’t advocate for maintaining or disrupting the power of any particular nation here — this isn’t my role — but the point of view is still very important even if you disagree with his ultimate goal. https://lnkd.in/ePQujFTQ
