The Apple Vision PRO - the best piece of modern technology I have ever come across where your eyes act as the cursor and your hand gestures as the click, zoom and move button. But as ground breaking as this is, it does unfortunately come with its fair share of health hazards right from eye strain, sleep pattern changes & aggravating symptoms of dry eyes, migraines, vertigo, inner ear disease and psychological conditions. Although this technology could potentially change the world, how we handle it will be key. Moving forward the focus would be on life itself and how this stays in the front and centre, and not the technology used in life. There will be more emphasis on how to achieve our personal digital wellbeing goals by fine tuning our tech habits to help minimise distractions, improve focus, disconnect more often and find a healthy balance between reality and virtual reality. So this is the second of three posts about an amazingly insightful article about Apple Health: near-term insights. While continuous blood glucose monitoring might have been the initial idea for the Apple Watch, we know that it is still a little ways off. What seems to be coming much quicker as next features are blood pressure monitoring and sleep apnea detection. For blood pressure monitoring, the device will likely include a notification to users that their blood pressure is trending up without any specific measurements to avoid medical device declaration. Users could then use a diary to monitor what might have caused the spike. Sleep apnea detection will be build on monitoring sleep and respiratory patterns that are already fairly advanced in current models. A companion or notification could alert users that they might want to see a specialist to be checked for a potential condition, similar to what is currently happening for atrial fibrillation. Both features will potentially be included in next year’s release of the Apple Watch and could further pave the way for the device to become a holistic #healthtech gadget. In addition, the Vision Pro will probably also include more wellness features from advanced meditation and workout features to cognitive recognition of conditions. And Apple stumbles over #healthcare? This might be an exaggeration but it is fairly telling that it is the dispute over a #healthtech feature that led to a recent ban of Apple Watches in the US rather than any other feature. Regulation, technical complexity, scientific accuracy are only among the challenges that make this space so competitive. The ban itself comes from yet another intriguing story. The Bloomberg article below does a nice job highlighting the different hiring practices, technical difficulties, and timelines that led to the current ban. In essence, the lawsuit claimed that Apple hired a key expert from Cercacor Laboratories, Inc. that took intricate knowledge with him. We will see what the future brings but the ban is another sign of the ever-present hurdles in #digitalhealth.
