What is the most straightforward way to reduce vessel emissions at port? It is using shore power. This also improves the surrounding air quality for nearby residents, and slashes fuel bills. The Port of Seattle is banking on those benefits and thus mandating the usage of shore power. This mandate, which applies to all cruise ships calling port, will come into force from 2027. "According to the port, plugging into shore power reduces diesel emissions from cruise vessels at berth by 80% on average. Furthermore, during the 2023 season, cruise ships using shore power avoided emitting 2,700 metric tons of greenhouse gases and 0.75 metric tons of diesel particulate matter." This will be interesting to see how crew will adapt to the changes when berthing at Seattle port. What are your thoughts on this? Feel free to comment below. #sustainableshipping #decarbonization

7 more Canadair for Greece is a win for all mediterranean olive growers, agricultural and animal farmers. It goes without saying it will save live’s and property in populated areas. These planes can also help Greece’s neighbours in an emergency and we will probably see immediate benefits and measurable returns. Having seen these water bombers plenty of times in action, they really do make a difference at the first plume of smoke in a mountain region. Will it help the destruction of olive crops to ensure pricing returns to normal one day? Let’s hope.

The 800lb gorilla in the corner is the fundamental business plans of the various smaller new players. Their strategies won’t work without the development of a robust, short haul, medium frequency feed network, the core of which has to be one of the triangles. At the end of 2001, 70 months after launch, WS had a fleet of 27 tails, an asl of 458.4 miles and utilization very close to 10 hours a day. With a l/f of 74.7%, the company generated an audited net earnings of $51.78m after paying out $15.23m in profit share. Lynx’s asl the week of Feb 11th was 1,465 miles with 9 tails. Flair’s asl the week of Feb 25th was 1,439 miles with 18 tails operating in Canada. Porter’s asl the week of Feb 25th was 1,231 miles, with 29 tails. Their utilization was 7hrs 7 mins a day, miles below the North American Industry average for sub 150 seat narrow bodies. Given the divergence from the only strategy that has resulted in a consistent, verifiable, audited track record of profitability for a Cdn domiciled new entrant over the past 30 years, it is no wonder that many long established observers of the industry are less than optimistic about the future of these latest attempts to rewrite Canadian commercial aviation history.

As one of my last post-mortem interviews on the demise of Canada's Lynx Airlines, I had an in-depth chat with Larysa Harapyn of Financial Post. My focus was to break down the forces that have shrunk Canada's discount-carrier sector. In addition to Lynx, I discussed Flair, the integration of Swoop into WestJet, and Jetlines (non-scheduled) during the discussion of discount players, as well as Air Canada, WestJet and Porter. There is only so much time in an interview, and ran out of runway to mention Air Transat. That said, I have been vocal of Transat's new direction and their successful pivot to the A321LRneo fleet as the backbone of their network. #airlines #aviation #bankruptcies #canada #travelnews #lynxairlines #lcc #ulcc #canpoli #polcan
