We've all heard statistics about the cybersecurity skills gap and the struggle to find qualified individuals to meet cybersecurity staffing needs. When we set to build out our SOC Analyst internship program, here are a few of the things that we had in mind: 1. The cybersecurity skills gap is not going to solve itself, and solving it will require companies to invest in developing those skills in people with the motivation and interest to do so. 2. Getting real-world, hands-on experience is one of the most challenging things that aspiring cybersecurity professionals face when looking to "get their foot in the door." 3. "Cybersecurity" is a diverse career field that requires diverse perspectives and talents and lends itself to a workforce from a wide spectrum of traditional and non-traditional career and educational paths. 4. Using a crawl-walk-run approach can provide existing team members with reinforcement as they work through their daily workstream alongside interns. 5. Providing people with the opportunity to gain real-world experience and training in a supportive and encouraging environment allows our company to develop a talent pipeline with a fundamental understanding of our culture, people, tools, and processes. Still, the trouble often lies in demonstrating actual experience in a fast-paced industry like cybersecurity. Home labs and Learning Platforms are nice to see on resumes, but may not fit the bill for most junior-level positions. Consider an internship to bridge the gap and get your foot in the door. An internship (or fellowship) program may be offered through companies directly (like Ingalls!), partnerships with a chamber of commerce, military affiliation, and higher education institutions. Once you’ve successfully begun yours, utilize it to build not only your knowledge base, but your network with genuine mentors, other interns, and colleagues!
