Over the last few weeks, many good things have been either initiated, moved forward, or completed. 1. Drafted a publication for a legislative proposal pertain to veterans in the opioid crisis. Been told it would be published this week. #fingerscrossed 2. My nonprofit Changing Cadence has gained a wonderful local partnership in the drug and alcohol addiction space. 3. My nonprofit has brought a new person onto the team for free veteran disability claims assistance for Placer country to help lighten a load with DHS. I will announce that soon. 4. Flew out to Cleveland to run philosophic operations for veterans through my outstanding and employee-based atmosphere of a company Leaf Home. After shipping multiple boxes back to my house, you can say my garage is filled with many boxes, ready to be sent overseas to our veterans in partnership with OPERATION: CARE AND COMFORT 5. Connected with many people within our community and city, with the plan to create a new veteran group and atmosphere for the area 6. Attended another great Leadership Roseville session, and sponsored an award for the upcoming City of Roseville Awards: Honoring our Police & Fire 7. Booked my ticket to Fort Lauderdale to see a new friend from NYC Bob Woodruff and his wonderful staff, as well as Craig Newmark, to join his organization the Bob Woodruff Foundation during their VOWS to discuss military veteran issues and solutions, as well as identify #key takeaways to being to our corporate veteran community internall 8. Became Director of Communications with Roll Out PTSD nonprofit (volunteer), hoping to send a veteran in need of purpose and revitalization, to Puerto Rico for a cohort: Coming Veterans Day! 9. Had a great board meeting with the U.S. Army Recruiting Command (USAREC) Northern California and our Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the US Army, Mr. Lance Izumi, J.D. - Thank you for leading, Lance. PURPOSE: Listing your accomplishments can look selfish and foolish, depending on the context. The focus of this list, is to showcase that good things can come from people in a selfless manner. In conclusion, I really hope this inspires anybody to be leader in your community, because I will support you 100%. September 11th will always be a date that makes people say, "I remember where I was." I certainly do - it's a day that changed the world and shaped my views of it. When unthinkable tragedies occur, strong people take decisive action. I've known many who joined the military in the aftermath of 9/11. Most who served our country with honor came back needing our support. Far too few found the support they needed. Tens of thousands of warriors have died by suicide since returning from overseas, several times more than died in the course of their duties. In the face of this new tragedy, the best among us have again stepped up (again) to create safety nets. Leaders like Michael Bloch with VETWERX, and the great team at Boulder Crest Foundation, have a vision for how to heal our heroes through "post-traumatic growth." Through their priceless work of guiding veterans and their families to "struggle well," they are healing communities and reversing trends, one life at a time. Last Thursday, I had a chance to volunteer at Boulder Crest for a few hours with fellow The Official Leadership Loudoun alumni, ahead of the Bluemont, VA, center's 10th anniversary celebration. Our work was focused on weeding the Hero Garden and walking paths, polishing light covers, and setting up tables and chairs under their big lawn tent. No detail or service is too small for the warriors and families that Boulder Crest serves. For me, it was an opportunity to zoom out on the last 22 years, as well as zoom in on how I can help move forward. So much about September 11th is too big to wrap our heads around. I didn't join the military or become a first responder. So much about suicide and mental health is too stigmatized to talk about. I'm not qualified to provide medical care. But I can and should help. One weed at a time, one chair at a time, we create space for people to heal. It's hard to learn your expression of appreciation isn't hitting the mark. Have you spent time talking to a veteran lately? Have you asked them how they want to be appreciated for their service? It's an eye and heart opening experience. Here are a few things that have been shared with me: - If you want to appreciate those who have served, serve yourself. Get involved in volunteering in the community in anyway. Their fallen brother or sister cannot continue their life of service. - Waving a flag and saying thank you is nice, but it feels like a lie when actions don't match up. Appreciation means caring for veterans throughout the year, and definitely more than just on a campaign year. They are not a political pawn. No party has done enough. - Did you know that many veterans have reached their lifetime cap of services through the VA and no longer have access to medical and mental health care benefits? - Survivors guilt is a life-long marathon. It is hard to receive appreciation when you feel guilty for making it home. - Mental health care has improved, but not enough. More funds, research, and intentionality is needed to helping soldiers heal. - We can do better than this for the next generation of veterans. #veteranappreciation #lessonslearned

In widowhood, there are three categories of support: military, civilian, and international. After researching all U.S. nonprofits serving widows on Candid and GuideStar, it's evident that there is a hierarchy when it comes to where the money travels. + Military widows, who make up the smallest percentage of U.S. widows, receive the most resources. + International widows, spread across many different countries, also receive U.S. support. + Unfortunately, civilian widows, who make up the largest percentage of U.S. #widows, receive the least amount of funding despite needing the most resources. These are the myths vs. realities of widow support and advocacy. It's clear that until this funding gap is addressed by foundations and funders, the divide between widows and support will remain significant. Let's work together to ensure that all widows, regardless of their category, receive the resources they need during this difficult time. Modern Widows Club operates on a foundation of evidence-based programs and services that have demonstrated significant and successful outcomes, leading to meaningful social impact. These initiatives are specially designed to cater to the needs of widows, offering support that is not only effective but also cost-efficient. Through these programs, Modern Widows Club is able to extend its reach to a greater number of women, ensuring that each individual receives the highest quality of support and assistance. When compared to other causes focused on women, such as efforts to serve survivors of #domesticviolence and #humantrafficking, Modern Widows Club's approach stands out for its lower operational costs and higher program efficacy. This strategic focus ensures that resources are utilized in the most impactful way, thereby maximizing the positive change it brings to the lives of widows and, by extension, the broader community. In fact, the global neglect of widow survivors make them more susceptible to domestic violence in new relationships and their daughters, a high target vulnerable for human trafficking. All symptoms of not caring for widows well. IMPACT 23 Nonprofit Spotlight: Orange County United Way Purpose Moment Livi Kerszenbaum, MBA, Sr. Director, Corporate Social Responsibility at OC United Way, shared a personal story underscoring life's unpredictability. Facing sudden responsibility as her husband recovered from a motorcycle accident, Kerszenbaum emphasized the importance of support systems, savings, and access to assistance. Highlighting the 'OC Way' of community support, OC United Way focuses on three key initiatives: Financial Security, Student Success, and Ending Homelessness. These efforts impact over a million lives annually, addressing graduation rates, family stability, and homelessness. Kerszenbaum emphasized the human inclination to contribute socially, citing OC United Way's 211 program connecting residents to vital services. Engaging in community service, she noted, correlates with improved mental well-being and longer life expectancies. The presentation concluded with a call for audience participation in a purposeful moment—sending words of encouragement for struggling veterans. As someone who is heavily focused on growing both personally and professional, collaboration is a key part of that journey. I not only want to BE that person to help other, I want to HAVE others help me. We are not meant to walk through life alone. One of the ways I do that is by teaching women ways to reduce stress in both their mind and their bodies, so that they can move through their days in a healthier way as well process any 'stories' they may be telling themselves that are keeping them stuck in self-judgement, fear or overwhelm. It’s Volunteers’ Week 💚   This celebration is a chance to recognise, celebrate and show appreciation for volunteers and all they contribute to our communities and societies. Volunteers’ Week was first established in 1984, by what was then known as Volunteering England, and this year marks the 40th anniversary.    I wanted to take this opportunity to celebrate the work of Samaritans. There are 23,000 volunteers throughout the UK; answering calls, running the 200 nationwide branches; and fundraising to keep this vital service accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.     Samaritans’ vision is that fewer people die by suicide. It’s not only there for moments of crisis, however, but for times when life is difficult and getting you down, when a listening ear might help you before you get to crisis point. And that’s what the volunteers do – listen with empathy and without judgement.
