This is huge issue for the car industry, and speaks to the importance of validating third parties in your supply chain. In addition, data backups should be captured at regular intervals and restored+tested to ensure preparedness for disruptions. At the consumer level we should follow this same advice of making regular backups on different mediums (eg, hard drives, cloud) in case of a system failure (I personally lost 18mths of photos when my HDD crashed, and I had not instituted regular backup schedule); and as Royce pointed out in the interview we should utilize VPN when connecting via WiFi (I believe this is true at public locations as well as at home). We can all learn from this unfortunate incident, it’s not a matter of ‘if’ but ‘when’ you could be impacted.
