In today's post, PTHR's Chief Futures Officer, Kirsten, talks about her story of finding purpose in her work.
"People are increasingly seeking purpose and personal value in their work.
As articulately defined by Gartner, the data shows us that:
1. Employees are people, not just workers.
2. Work is a subset of life, not separate from it.
3. Value comes through feelings, not just features.
This evolution in the reason for work is something I have felt since graduating back in 2010. I’ve searched for purpose, definitely found it in pockets, and learned a lot along the way.
In life, we are fortunate to thrive and not merely survive.
And thrive is what I believe I have been able to do within my role at PTHR. The system we are within encourages a state of flourishing for all of our team; and with 85% of us having primary care responsibilities in our personal lives, this is a real testament to our operating model, our culture, our practices and systems, and at the heart of this, our principles.
You could say that we work hard and with relentless intentionality to ensure what matters to us as individuals, is reflected in our mission.
The relationship between personal and collective purpose is explored in Perry Timms' 42@work model (in image below). We use this as a diagnostic to sense check where we are flourishing, and also where there may be a temporary break in the system. For example, the system is powered by human energy and the whole purpose of the employee experience is for people to flourish, which you can build from left to right, and then you can diagnose from right to left - to find where there is need for any adaptation.
Do you feel purpose in a system of flourishing people? Most of us will work for the majority of our lives. We all deserve to find this joy, a sense of purpose."
