Can Social Impact programs play a critical role in Transforming the Human Condition? If so, it’s all about empathy. Empathy happens when we understand that we share needs, that we are all impacted by similar problems, and that our shared experiences are just as informative as our differences. Transformative Volunteering creates opportunities in which equal partners have an opportunity to alert one another to new understandings about ourselves and others through mutually beneficial experiences. This is how we increase the value and impact of volunteering. If you want to experience it for yourself, join us at Social REV LIVE this fall (register here: https://lnkd.in/eMReRpBN) Until then, dive into this blog: https://bit.ly/3nt7Bvr

Volunteering has been a cornerstone of my life for over a decade, spanning youth advocacy, university societies, and everything in between. It has taught me many invaluable lessons, but what has always made volunteering so rewarding is the incredible people I've met along the way. One of the volunteer groups I'm most fortunate to be a part of is the Global Shapers Melbourne. This network consists of inspiring young leaders worldwide, and it's truly an honour to be among them. Through this network, I've had the opportunity to connect with amazing young individuals like Alex Bruhn and Suresan Rajandra from Global Shapers Hub Adelaide for a random dinner on a Wednesday night while they were in town. We went from being complete strangers to engaging in deep conversations over a two-hour dinner, which left me with a feeling of re-found inspiration and gratitude. We discussed our backgrounds, the awkward transition from being a 'young leader' to just a 'leader' and my personal favourite, the importance and role of "third places" in providing a space for community. A #thirdplace is a social environment distinct from home (first place) and work (second place), which provides a welcoming atmosphere for people to socialise, engage in meaningful conversations, and foster a sense of belonging. So... here's my shameless plug: Join us next Saturday for 'Conversations with the Global Shapers Melbourne Hub' and experience the magic of a third place for yourself. Engage in inspiring discussions, meet some terrific people, and (re)discover the importance of community in forging meaningful connections and why third places are so important. (I even heard there may be some special guests 🤷♂️) The invitation is completely non-committal and open to all young people across diverse backgrounds and interests. If you're unsure - I strongly encourage you to show up and give it a go; some of the best opportunities in my life have come from leaning into the unknown and just saying yes. So... what have you got to lose? Hope to see you there 👋 #Volunteering #GlobalShapers #Connections #Community

"Volunteering can be a transactional activity, or it can challenge the way you think about the world and your place in it," says Mandy Iverson. In that vein, the Medtronic Foundation and the Medtronic GIDE team have started a conversation on how to transform corporate volunteering. They created an Equity in Community Engagement Toolkit, and while it isn't available publicly (exclusive content for Medtronic employees!), we were able to share three tips for engaging responsibly with the community -- especially when it comes to corporate volunteer opportunities. First, make sure you’re partnering with organizations that share community-centric values. There are a few things you can look for, such as an organization's mission and values explicitly mentioning a commitment to equity and inclusion and having diverse staff and leadership. Check out the article for the other two tips 📝

"Ten years ago, if you Googled the term "skills-based volunteering," you might be one of roughly 100 people to do so globally in any given month. Today, it's 72 million. Needless to say, skills-based volunteering (SBV) is gaining momentum." By embracing skills-based volunteering, like those offered by Common Impact, as a strategic tool for social change, companies can strengthen their brand reputation, drive employee engagement, foster skill development, and make a lasting difference in their communities.
