New data shows that the Waymo Driver continues to make roads safer. Over 14.8M rider-only miles driven through the end of March, it was up to 3.5x better in avoiding crashes that cause injuries and 2x better in avoiding police-reported crashes than human drivers in SF and Phoenix. Comparing AV and human drivers’ crash rates is not a trivial task. Last December, we introduced clear human benchmarks for such analysis and showed that the Waymo Driver significantly outperformed them over the first 7M+ rider-only miles. New data provides more evidence for the Waymo Driver’s safety benefits. By voluntarily sharing this safety data, beyond regulatory reporting requirements, we hope to enhance transparency and foster trust with our riders and communities we drive in. Learn more about our safety research at https://waymo.com/safety and stay tuned for more safety updates in the coming months.

Wait, so you're comparing "A driver" to multiple cars operating on the same software? That's an interesting way to marketing-magic some numbers. What happens to this "Safety metric" of comparing one average driver to a fleet of vehicles when someone accidentally decides that children-sized humans are "safe to hit" (like a utility pole) or accidentally become classified as perception noise. Comparing uneventful miles and conflating that against the safety holes already present in how you develop and test the software is a biiiiiig stretch to qualifying them as "Safe miles." Also, the "Average driver" does not drive 14.8 millions miles in their lifetime, more like 700k, so it's quite disingenuous to present those next to each as though the "Average driver" ever even approaches 1.5m miles, let alone 14. Stretching metrics that only apply to 700k miles and applying that same possibility of error over 20 TIMES the average rate, that's some bad math/logic right there.

while also Waymo may from time to time may have its lapses as reported, I have absolutely no doubt that in general it is much more safer than human drivers

And the technology is only getting better. Its good to see that Waymo, since day 1, has prioritized safety in their growth rather than compromising and cutting corners like some others have. With as big of an impact as autonomous cars will have on society, we need companies that are growing ethically and safely.

Way to go Waymo ! This is absolutely the true promise of AV. Combining that with a novel experience will revolutionize the automotive sector and transportation. Keep the good work !

I really wish this tech could be combined with human drivers and as a part of standard equipment on consumer purchasable car. I wonder how high the impact would be if both were used. Maybe 10x improvement?

Safety is not really what you're selling. What you're selling people is time. It saves time to use Waymo. Please focus future marketing along those lines.

These cherry picked misinformation will not save Waymo. Facts are very different from what is presented here.
