Yesterday colleagues across the entire brewing industry gathered at the Nibem (the Dutch institute for barley, malt & beer) day to share knowledge, learn and inspire each other on the topic of CO2 reduction. Martijn Iersel van, our Manager Quality & Technology, had the pleasure to talk about the realization of our emission-free malthouse in Eemshaven and how this reduces our environmental impact. Martijn: “We are fully aware of our social and environmental responsibilities. We believe in the need for change. Ideas become reality by pioneering and thinking outside the box. The construction of our emission-free malthouse was initiated in this way. By 2024 the source of beer doesn’t emit any CO2 emissions anymore. I hope we inspire others with our story, because together we can make a difference”. Will you join us in a more sustainable future? We will start at the source #letsmakethesourcesustainable #emissionfreemalthouse #worktogether

Sustainable Solutions in Austria: Deposit Systems! Despite major logistical challenges, deposit systems are once again in vogue in Austria. 🥛 "Berglandmilch" has introduced reusable milk bottles, and "Limö" has launched the reusable bottle for fruit juices and lemonades. 🍼🍋 These innovations are helping us reduce waste and make eco-conscious choices. 🍻 Even the alcoholic beverage sector is joining the movement! Key players in the beer industry are collaborating on a 0.33-liter reusable glass bottle, set to hit Austrian markets in late 2023 to early 2024. 🍷 But the sustainability wave doesn't stop there! The "Mehrweg-Bouteille" project is working with Austrian winemakers to develop a 0.75-liter reusable wine bottle. 🌿 The Austrian Institute of Ecology is playing a vital role, supporting these initiatives and aiding SMEs through the "Mehrweg-Pfadfinder" guide. This resource helps small businesses navigate the logistical challenges of deposit systems and offers recommendations for a smooth transition. 🌎 It's inspiring to see Austria's commitment to sustainability and the circular economy. Let's raise our glasses (preferably reusable ones!) to these positive changes! 🥂💚 #PackLess-Project #SustainableAustria #DepositSystems #CircularEconomy #ReduceWaste #SustainabilityInnovation #MehrwegBouteille #ErasmusPlus #PackLess #smes #erasmus Fundacja Ekopotencjał - Przestrzeń Możliwości Paiz Konsulting Fachhochschule des Mittelstands (FHM) Yambol Chamber of Commerce and Industry Österreichisches Ökologie-Institut

What do you expect to happen with food trays after use? Sad but true: Most of them are landfilled or burned, only a very small percentage is recycled today. This must change! Today, on Earth Day, we're reminded of our collective responsibility to protect our planet and ensure a brighter future. Earth Day, celebrated annually on April 22nd, is a global call to action for environmental conservation and sustainability. Earth Day at Faerch is a commitment to a circular future in food packaging. Our purpose is to supply the global food industry with high-quality and safe food packaging solutions whilst driving the circular transition as an integrated recycler. This year's Earth Day theme, "Planet vs. Plastics," aligns perfectly with Faerch's mission. Each year, over 1.4 million tonnes and approximately 106 billion pieces of rigid food packaging flood the market. While Faerch's Cirrec plant in Duiven addresses 4% of this waste, it's just the start. More than 90% of sold products are landfilled or burned, highlighting the magnitude of the problem. "Our products often have a lifespan of just 8 days. We want to change that," says our CEO Lars Gade Hansen. "That's why we've invested in recycling capacity to create demand for PET tray, tub, and pot waste and calling out for a collaborative approach towards change." In last week’s Grand Open ceremony in Duiven, Netherlands, Chief Investment Officer of A.P. Møller Holding A/S, Jan Nielsen, emphasized Faerch's tangible commitment to circularity. “Today, true circularity in PET for food packaging has become a reality in the Benelux, Germany, and Sweden,” Nielsen stated. Meaning the solution is here - that’s the good news! At Faerch, we're committed to reducing and reusing plastics with a positive impact on the planet we are living in. Join us in our journey towards a more resource-efficient and circular future in food packaging!♻🌀 #EarthDay #Planetvsplastics #CircularEconomy #FaerchGroup

18th March was Global Recycling Day, and we got to share a special product, from one of our Sphere Open innovation pilot projects with colleagues at OMV and Borealis head office, here in Vienna. Hungry colleagues picked up samples of fertilizer made from spent coffee grounds, alongside their lunch. It was pretty cool to say "you made this" as we handed over the bags. Those spent coffee grounds have been collected as "waste but not waste" from OMV VIVA shops and head office over the last few months. The grounds are given a second life by being blended with sheep wool from Salzburg and wood chips to make really effective, slow release, year-round fertilizer for your plants. I’m really chuffed that it’s going to be on sale at selected OMV VIVA shops in Vienna, Lower Austria and Upper Austria from the middle of April. It’s a project that has proved that innovation and sustainability take collaboration, adaptability and creativity. We’ve worked closely with BeanSaver® BeResilient GmbH, and who have amassed a chain of partners to manage the collection and formulate the most viable and high-quality product. Huge credit to Vera Amtmann and the BeanSaver® team along with Vildana Kurtovic, Andrea Nussbaum, Markus Erkinger, Anton Kieberger, Odainic Nicolae, Sabine Haas who’ve committed lots of enthusiasm, time and energy to pull this off. #coffee #spentcoffeegrounds #openinnovation #OMV #BeanSaver #Borealis #sustainability #circularity #notwaste #recycle #repurpose #experiment #fertilizer

What are some of the key drivers for boosting recycling rates worldwide? ➤ Digitalisation is key for achieving global recycling targets and adapting to diverse regulatory requirements ➤ Increased transparency and optimisation in recycling processes can open new doors for partnerships across the value chain ➤ Taking action now and participating in initiatives like HolyGrail 2.0, the Alliance’s pilot project trialling the use of digital watermarks on plastic packaging, are crucial to driving meaningful progress in sustainable packaging These insights and more were shared during a recent episode of Packaging Europe's podcast, where host Elisabeth Skoda caught up with Jan 't Hart, the AIM - European Brands Association project manager for the HolyGrail 2.0 project, and Pranav Goenka, one of the Alliance to End Plastic Waste senior advisors. Together, they discussed the role of digital watermarking in enhancing sorting and recycling rates, HolyGrail 2.0’s final R&D phase ahead of market entry, the launch of a pilot in France in 2024, and steps for large-scale market adoption. 3wSounds great! Can you define 'green packs'? Are they less plastic and recyclable or with x% recycled content, bio-based? What are your onjectives moving forward? In terms of transparency just curious to learn more!
