Helping health systems prepare for their health equity accreditation | 50/50 Women on Board Semi-Finalist | Board Member (Governance, Innovation Committee Chair) | ESG Advocate | Early Adopter | (Careful) Disruptor
Just under 60% of health care industry stakeholders said it could take a DECADE before the US sees significant improvement in health equity. This and other alarming findings are summarized in the Rise to Health Coalition's survey of 1400 health care professionals that was just released. The top 3 factors survey respondents view as necessary to achieve health equity are: 1. Addressing Social Determinants of Health, 2. Make health info more understandable and tailored to patients with diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, and 3. Expand structural and cultural competency training for health care professionals and students. It remains a daily frustration that so many health systems often have departments of 1--just one person--responsible for DEI or Health Equity. Even worse is that these individuals often do not report to the CEO. Amid the growing evidence that inequities are impacting the livelihood of diverse patients and leading to premature deaths, healthcare systems cannot stall in their efforts to advance #healthequity or stop addressing #healthinequities Some are letting the political discourse in their region and the #SCOTUS decision on #affirmativeaction distract them from the vital work needed to provide #healthcare4all If you are feeling alone in your HEDI journey at your site, please reach out. The cost of health care shouldn’t be hidden - it should be transparent. That’s why we created a website as a resource hub to equip thought leaders, policymakers, employers, consumers, and other stakeholders to drive policy change and ultimately lower health care costs. The creation of our resource hub stems from our listening work, where participants in focus groups consistently referred to cost as an issue when seeking health care services. People continue to bear the brunt of these costs, which often need to be clarified and compound an already confusing system. Higher prices for health services and care are a barrier for many people, leading to people delaying care, translating into poorer health outcomes, and exacerbating existing inequities. We don’t have to be in an #AffordabilityCrisis. Reign in health care prices ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/g57gfkNH

According to a new survey commissioned by the Rise To Health Coalition, more than 82 percent of respondents—all of whom work in the health care industry—said that health equity is very or somewhat significant in our health care system today. At the same time, less than half of respondents (43.08 percent) said they were either very or somewhat confident the current health care system can effectively address health equity. On the subject of value based health care again, I found this paper from the Deeble Institute that issues a cautionary note about the pursuit of value- based health care funding. The report argues that value-based health care may prioritise efficiency over equity, which may mean that some patients or populations miss out. They do suggest a solution in that value should be defined at the population level rather than at the individual level (as individual preferences). It would be good to hear what others have to say as efficiency and equity are both core principles of our health care system.
