I love this! Jack Rutstein, one of our senior Management Fellows, was featured in The Wall Street Journal. In the immortal words of Calvin Coolidge (one of my favorite presidents): “Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan 'Press On!' has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.” ― Calvin Coolidge Jack Rutstein embodies this characteristic. A direct quote from the NACE Position statement: "Particularly troubling, NACE research has also found that all college students are not equitably represented in internships (Inequity in Internships, NACE, 2021). According to survey data, women, Black, Hispanic, and first-generation students were underrepresented in paid internships. In 2022, NACE followed up on that initial analysis and the internship data from 187 employers demonstrated nearly identical inequities. Again, women, Black, and Hispanic students were significantly underrepresented as a proportion of paid interns. Taken together, the research shows that white, male, and continuing generation students are disproportionally overrepresented in paid internships. Providing more paid internships for underrepresented populations will lead to greater access, opportunity, and success for participating students; help fill critical roles throughout the employment landscape; and lead to needed diversification of the workforce." Internships are a high-impact practice that colleges and universities should be paying significant attention to and identifying action steps to close equity gaps.

ProX Summer intern Mia Myers, recently joined fellow interns Madison Peppers and Bryan Mayer to talk with Steve Kraske live on KCUR 89.3 Up to Date! They discussed gun violence in Kansas City, and how the projects they worked on during their paid ProX summer internships with KC Common Good, Second Chance KC (Kansas City Metropolitan Crime Commission), and the City of Kansas City, Mo., Health Department, addressed the issue. ProX is a regional collaborative that pairs Kansas City students with area businesses for five-week paid summer internships or work projects supervised by a professional mentor. An initiative incubated at the Kauffman Foundation, ProX provides coaching support to every student throughout the application, placement, learning and work experience. “It's a way that you can go into whatever field that you want. There are so many different internships that they had, so you can like do different things that might tailor to your career or just interest you. And another thing is, it was paid. And I think that's a big thing to say because a lot of the kids that are out here, they need money. They need something to be able to support themselves or their families. So, I think that even just being able to get more opportunities like these internships will also just make such a difference,” said Mia Myers who completed a Prox internship with KC Common Good. By effectively utilizing summer interns' skills and enthusiasm, you can achieve your campaign goals more effectively:

We have our summer intern already on week two. Every Friday he has to report on the project that he's responsible for. He makes us aware of urgent items and things needing action. We have different people on our team that work with him on different parts of his project. That way he's accountable for his work while getting exposure to working with everyone on our team including Grant La Bounty, Chris Vassilian and Jeannette Cano. That gives him experience from four different points of view. But ultimately, we make sure one person is responsible for his success and so that he knows who he can turn to when thinking about future direction without ambiguity. This will be the second year of working with other industry partners to collaborate on meetings together so that our interns get to meet their interns and make new contacts.
