Architectural design refers to the planning, design, and construction of buildings and structures. It's a field that involves both creativity and technical knowledge, as architects must balance aesthetics with practical considerations like structural integrity, building codes, and cost efficiency. The process of architectural design typically starts with an idea or concept, which is then translated into a plan or blueprint. From there, the architect works with engineers, contractors, and other professionals to bring the design to life. There are many different styles and approaches to architectural design, from traditional to modern, but all share the common goal of creating functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces. Having a beautiful architectural design is great, but if you aren’t paying your architect to be involved in the construction phase of your project, that beautiful architectural design you paid for may never come to fruition and here’s why 👇 https://lnkd.in/d8Z_3BRP

Site visits are the cornerstone of architectural practice. As architects, our designs don't just exist on paper or in digital renderings—they come to life in the physical spaces we create. 1. They allow us to understand the context, the environment, and the nuances of a site in ways that drawings alone cannot capture. 2. From assessing topography and natural light to understanding the community and its needs, site visits inform every aspect of our design process, ensuring that our buildings not only stand but thrive within their surroundings. 3. Moreover, site visits foster invaluable relationships with clients, contractors, and stakeholders. By being present on-site, architects demonstrate their commitment to the project and gain firsthand insights into potential challenges and opportunities. These interactions build trust and collaboration, laying the groundwork for successful project outcomes. Let's not overlook the power of the site visit—it's not just about seeing, but about truly understanding and connecting with the spaces we're entrusted to design. #sitevisit #architecture #design #lifeofanarchitect

https://lnkd.in/dCedXvpZ 📌 Architects are paid to think not just to draw. Read that again. This statement highlights that architects' value extends far beyond their drawing skills. They are paid to think critically, solve complex problems, and design functional, aesthetically pleasing, and sustainable buildings and spaces. Their expertise involves understanding client needs, considering environmental and regulatory factors, planning for safety and efficiency, and integrating diverse elements into a cohesive design. In essence, their role requires creativity, strategic thinking, and technical knowledge, making their thought process as crucial as their ability to produce drawings. When I was doing my A-levels I considered applying for physics degrees but decided to follow a path into Architectural Technology instead. I've been fascinated by the Passivhaus and Enerphit standard since uni and I think my interest in it has always stemmed from my interest in building physics. Over the last 5 years I've also become very aware of the impact we're having on our environment. I've made lifestyle changes to reduce my personal environmental impact yet with 25% of UK emissions directly attributable to the built environment we can have an even larger positive impact on the environment through our work. There was a great article in the AJ recently by Scott McAulay about the impact we can have as designers. Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) have just launched their climate society, there's a highly climate-conscious architect running for RIBA president (Duncan Baker-Brown), and we're very likely to have a more climate focused government starting in the next couple of weeks. Hopefully we're reaching a tipping point for positive change as an industry and nation rather than an environmental tipping point (and focusing on the positives helps keeps my climate doomism at bay too)! 😅 I'm super grateful to LSI Architects for supporting me to undertake the Passive House training and I'm really looking forward to putting all the learning into practice. I've already worked on some great retrofit projects at LSI, such as Morley College mentioned in the article - here's to the many Passivhaus, Enerphit, and other low carbon new build and retrofit projects ahead of us. If you're thinking of becoming a Passive House Designer, I highly recommend Coaction Training CIC. The course was great and all the tutors were super knowledgeable with backgrounds and experience spanning the breadth of the industry. Undertaking my first exam in almost 10 years was a bit intimidating (where has the time gone since graduation?) but the course prepared me well for it.
