"Hallucinate" is Cambridge Dictionary's word of the year for 2023 - but should it be? Many people in the AI space feel uncomfortable with the way we apply human vocabulary to this technology, in particular. I'm inclined to agree. Words like Hallucinate can be a helpful shorthand for something much more complicated, but they also colour the way that we, as humans, interpret and think about the technology at play. And it makes us feel that there is a degree of consciousness involved when, actually, there isn't. As we plan for a future that could see AI change everything, nailing down the vocabulary would be a helpful way to make sure we all share a basic understanding of what's at play here. And what's not.
