On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, marking the birth of the United States of America and its separation from British rule. The Declaration, primarily drafted by Thomas Jefferson, was a bold assertion of the colonies' desire for freedom and self-governance. It laid the foundation for a nation built on principles of liberty, equality, and the pursuit of happiness. Appreciating and paying respect to the unique heritage and culture of those whose origins are native to the Americas, Indigenous Peoples’ Day offers the opportunity to honor, learn, celebrate and raise awareness. Honoring Native American people throughout the United States, Indigenous Peoples’ Day was first officially celebrated in the US in 2021, when US President Joe Biden became the first president to formally recognize the day. However, the idea for the day goes back much further. In 1977, the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland sponsored the International Conference on Discrimination Against Indigenous Populations in the Americas. Part of the purpose was to begin celebrating Indigenous Peoples’ Day, particularly with the idea of replacing the adoration and glorification of Christopher Columbus with recognition and acknowledgement of the native peoples of the land. Columbus Day, which is an American holiday, falls on the second Monday of October in the United States, has been less revered in recent years. This is likely due to the fact that the indigenous peoples of the time had their lands and lives taken away from them by the settlers from Europe, and the American people are becoming more aware of the way history has been written only from the perspective of the white person. In exchange for Columbus Day, many people in the United States have begun the celebration of Indigenous Peoples Day instead. At least twelve of the United States do not celebrate Columbus Day, and the state of South Dakota celebrates Native American Day instead. Tribal governments in Oklahoma have also made declarations regarding the celebration of Native American Day. We live in an era of great confusion and disappointment with governance and a general dissatisfaction in our representation in OUR government. Allow me share some memorable advice my granma used to share to me- "things seem to always get worse before they get better", or even more shared, "It's always darkest right before dawn". The idea of "America" was that of a "great experiment", at a time where entire nations were either ruLED by a monarchy or were empires were RULED by emperors, a group of enlightened people conceptualized the idea of a nation ruled by the people. They even postulated a number of scenarios in that! Some were unrealistic, some were marginally laughable. But the concept was so appealing, men were willing to die for it. In the decades around what we today know as America's "Independence Day", this nation developed a principle that would be used over and over in many other lands on this planet. Back to today- I try to remember the advice from my granma when I understand that the experiment is still running, because the settings were never potted in epoxy- Lest we forget that those enlightened people considered that times would change, society would change and thus governance should be able to change to support that change. I won't waste your time talking about the things we should have learned in our civics classes in school, but consider those now... As we celebrate our Independence, let us also remember that the cost of FREEDOM is NEVER FREE- When we are a military protecting the homeland from external influences that would compromise the autonomy of our nation's governance or it's people's freedoms, OR safety. Or, a citizen that understands that we are not expected to leave the governance of our country to someone else, but that a government "Of, WE the People" means that what we have is the product of our contributions, or lack there of... Make America what you expect it to be, make YOUR contributions to it- participate in the government of it, scrutinize the abilities and effectiveness of those you choose to represent you in government, consider what happens to the governance as that representative exploits your representation- we are NOT choosing leaders here folks- we are CHOOSING those that REPRESENT our expectations in the governance of this "Nation built on the GREAT EXPERIMENT... Original Declaration (link below to read all of it): WHEN in the Course of human Events, it becomes necessary for one People to dissolve the Political Bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the Earth, the separate and equal Station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent Respect to the Opinions of Mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the Separation. We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness—-That to secure these Rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these Ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its Foundation on such Principles, and organizing its Powers in such Form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. He has refused to pass other Laws for the Accommodation of large Districts of People, unless those People would relinquish the Right of Representation in the Legislature, a Right inestimable to them, and formidable to Tyrants only. It’s the second Monday of October, and while many people may be enjoying the day off for Columbus Day, our staff are taking the day to reflect on the contributions and perseverance of Indigenous peoples. Throughout American history, there has been a terrible habit of not just suppressing communities of color but prioritizing White narratives on top of that. We don’t want to continue this #trend, and this is why we celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day instead of Columbus Day alongside the Biden-Harris White House Administration as an organization In spite of unimaginable loss and seemingly insurmountable odds, Indigenous peoples have persisted through immense violence and devastation while continuing to be an integral part of the fabric of the United States. They challenge all of us to #celebrate the good, confront the bad, and tell the whole truth of our history. Their diverse cultures and communities today are a testament to the unshakable and unbreakable commitment of many generations to preserve their cultures and identities, something we know many communities of color can identify with. For those of you who aren’t working today, we hope you join us in recognizing the fact that our country could not be what it is today without the contributions and sacrifices of Indigenous peoples. For those not off this #IndigenousPeoplesDay, we hope you take some time to have a thoughtful discussion with your coworkers or classmates today about these ideas.
