For students #interning this summer, A return offer should always be top-of-mind. Here is what I did at #cisco that got me my next spot: "Network with those who have a say:" I'd find teams that aligned with my interests. I then reached out to their managers or team leads. Those conversations got me introduced to my future team. "Overcommunicate:" Internship projects have loads of uncertainty. Whenever in doubt, fire up a chat or set up a 1-1. Professionals LOVE when you pick their brains on things. "Keep iterating:" As you continue to learn, Showcase your progress to your team. Baking team feedback into your work goes a LONG way. "Take your time:" Thoughtfulness is a sign of maturity. Walk or sleep on problems your project solves. This will help you design solutions before building them. "Quantify, quantify, quantify:" Leadership is obsessed with numbers. Extracting data out of your work gets more visibility. If you can showcase those numbers in graphs, that's a BONUS. "Have fun. Seriously:" Enjoy meetups and team lunches. Make new friends, take pictures, go to movies. You want to be remembered by everyone around. As I near the end of my Masters degree journey this May, I found myself sitting down to jot down some of the lessons that I picked up from my internships. They've been a big part of getting me to where I am now. It wasn't just about jumping from one company to another – I saw each internship as a chance to learn and grow. Whether it was at HCLTech and Morgan Stanley during my undergrad, or Honeywell and Nokia during my Masters, each played a significant role in shaping my personal and professional growth. 1. Setting goals and tracking my progress weekly kept me focused and helped me get the most out of my time at the company. 2. Seeking feedback from managers and team members proved very useful, allowing me to realign, improvise, or continue excelling in my work. 3. I made sure to assert my presence by asking questions, proposing solutions, and actively engaging in conversations. This not only integrated me into the team but also enhanced my ability to effectively convey ideas and collaborate. 4. Understanding the broader landscape beyond my tasks was crucial for my success as a tech intern, so I took the initiative to grasp it. 5. Lastly, I learned the importance of going above and beyond by consistently delivering more than what was expected of me. Looking back, I personally feel that the lessons learned extend far beyond the confines of the workplace. Each experience reinforced the notion that 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐩𝐮𝐭 𝐢𝐧 — 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐭. Moreover, internships were not just about what I could gain — they were also about what I could contribute.
