Supporting Positive Change. You’ll find these three words on the walls of the Sacramento County Probation Department’s offices and the homepage of their website. And if you talk to any of the 700 employees working within the department, it won’t be long before you’ll hear them invoke the phrase. It’s been the department’s motto for over seven years now, and it embodies their philosophy of rehabilitation over punishment. Some may perceive Probation Officers (PO) as hard-edged, but a good PO needs the ability to build relationships. AP’s outstanding Community Corrections Team establishes rapport with individuals to get them to open up & listen to direction. Our staff must also maintain good relationships in the community, with local service agencies, & other support systems that help the individuals get back on their feet, complete all requirements, & transition successfully to the community. #PPPSWeek #strongertogether #thelittlenonprofitthatcould

Did you know Franklin County is the only large county in Ohio without a re-entry docket? These dockets help people as they are being released from prison - with housing, employment, mental health services and anything else they may need as they are working to get back on their feet. Courts can’t just send people to prison. We have to be there on the other side. It’s absolutely the role of courts and judges to have an interest in this work. As your judge, I plan to bring a re-entry docket to Franklin Counry. Let’s go. #hannaforjudge

History was made in PA! 🎉 THANK YOU Governor Shapiro for signing #ProbationReform bill #SB838 into law. 🖊 I’m so honored to be a member of the #PASafetyCoalition and work alongside 125+ groups committed to probation reform. Together, we have made the probation system more fair for all! This isn't just a bill; it's a second chance for hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvanians. It’s a real opportunity for individuals on probation to rebuild, thrive, and make a meaningful impact in their communities. Senate Bill 838 will ➡️ ✅ Limit when someone can be sent to prison for a technical violation and how long they can be incarcerated for. ✅ Expand pathways to early termination when probation is no longer needed. ✅ Individualize conditions of probation aligned to unique risks & needs. ✅ Account for people’s financial situations and ability to pay fines, fees, and restitution.

Today, we shared a powerful discussion at the Juvenile Justice Association of Michigan, focusing on the critical role of probation officers. Our talk highlighted the importance of understanding the biases and challenges faced by families in the juvenile justice system. We believe in fostering strong partnerships between parents, probation officers, and the legal system to better serve our youth. 🗣 While well intentioned the below information is not always a realistic option as explaining a criminal record to potential employers can be a re-traumatising experience, especially for individuals whose conviction histories are deeply rooted in past abuse and trauma (which is the case hearing first hand experiences from my peers tell me and is reinforced by research). 👨⚖️ You have to explain yourself to the courts - you do your time and or conditions and then you have to continually explain yourself for the rest of your life it seems where is this ongoing discrimination and judgement factored into sentencing. It grossly hinders the ability to be able to take on meaningful, skilled roles where you can contribute in a positive way to society. All of the people that I know with living experience have a multitude of knowledge and value that cannot be taught in text books and are kind and compassionate despite the horrific treatment and trauma that they have had to overcome. 🛑 This process often forces us to relive painful memories and confront stigma and judgment, which can hinder reintegration and emotional healing. Here are key points for employers and people working within Government departments like "Blue Card Services" to consider when discussing this issue: 👩🎓 We are PEOPLE not a charge on a piece of paper, we are not the sum of our offences. 💔 Having to recount past offences can trigger painful memories and emotions, leading to re-traumatisation. Are you having these conversations with us that are framed in a psychologically safe way and offering support during this process? The fear of being judged or rejected based on their past can exacerbate feelings of shame and worthlessness, which are often prevalent among trauma survivors. The stress and anxiety associated with disclosing a criminal record can impede our efforts to rebuild their lives and achieve stability. In my experience many employers may not fully understand the complex, trauma-related factors that contributed to the individual’s criminal behaviour, leading to unfair assessments and decisions - Decisions based on judgment and personal bias as opposed to selecting the best person for the role. I want to strongly highlight the importance of trauma-informed approaches in hiring practices and the need for employers to create supportive environments that facilitate rather than hinder rehabilitation and reintegration. Many employers claim to be fully inclusive when they are not, this needs to change. We need hiring practices that consider the deep-seated challenges faced by individuals with conviction histories. Have you been discriminated against when applying for a role due to your criminal record? If you feel safe and comfortable to do so please share your thoughts below (if not please send me a DM always happy to chat). Are you an employer that wants to know how you can make your employment process trauma informed and inclusive lets have a conversation.
We know having a stable, well-paying job is one of the leading factors for enabling a person to successfully reintegrate into their community after contact with the criminal justice system. Please support our Second Chance Jobs program. https://lnkd.in/gCuhRPX #reintegration #secondchances
