In Cambodia, our Community Fishery partners are working to save sea turtles trapped in fishing nets. Over the past few weeks, local fishers accidentally caught three endangered green sea turtles and reported them to the Changhaon Community Fishery in Kampot. The Changhaon team weighed, documented, and tagged the turtles before releasing them back into the Gulf of Thailand. By tagging turtles, we can track their movements and improve protection efforts. Big thanks to the Changhaon Community Fishery for making this work possible! 📷: Ben Valentine #SeaTurtleRescue #SeaTurtleConservation

🎣🐟 Exploring the Fascinating Vietnamese Fishing Techniques! 🇻🇳 In Vietnam, fishermen have honed unique methods to catch fish, showcasing the country's rich fishing culture. One intriguing approach involves the use of "Basket Boats" or Coracles (thung chai) in Central Vietnam. These small, round boats crafted from bamboo and woven fibers are tailored to navigate the rocky coastlines and shallow waters with precision. A key method employed by fishermen is the art of "net casting." This technique involves casting a large net from the Basket Boat to ensnare fish in the shallow waters. Additionally, fishermen utilize "Fishing nets attached to poles," employing long poles with nets attached to capture fish effectively in these waters. Venturing to the Mekong Delta unveils another captivating practice known as "fishing with birds." Fishermen here train birds to plunge into the water, seize fish, and then retrieve the catch from the bird's beak. These techniques not only highlight the resourcefulness of Vietnamese fishermen but also underscore the deep-rooted traditions embedded within the nation's fishing heritage. 🌊✨ Follow Abdul Salam for more... #Vietnam #FishingCulture #InnovativeTechniques #Traditions #ExploreVietnam #FishingHeritage

Today, the allocation of total allowable catches for the Southern and Eastern Scalefish and Shark Fishery have reset, marking the beginning of the 12-month fishing season. The fishery is a multi-sector, multi-species fishery that covers almost half of the Australian Fishing Zone, stretching south from Fraser Island in southern Queensland, around Tasmania, to Cape Leeuwin in southern Western Australia, contributing approximately AUD $100 million to the Australian economy. Fresh, sustainably caught fish is landed in Eden, Lakes Entrance, Portland, Devonport, Hobart, Port Welshpool, Port Lincoln, and Thevenard for the Australian market. Target species include blue grenadier, tiger flathead, silver warehou, gummy shark, pink ling, and eastern school whiting. We ensure the Southern and Eastern Scalefish and Shark Fishery is sustainably managed by limiting the catch, restricting how many boats can fish, and regulating what gear they can use and where. Fishing cats are renowned for their ability to fish. This #SelfieSundaySpecies was caught on camera getting its food in Cambodia. In neighboring Thailand, Panthera has fitted several fishing cats with GPS collars in order to study how they move in a terrain fragmented by farms and railways. Greece has announced that it will ban bottom trawling in all of its marine protected areas by 2030. The Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stated that the country would become the first to end the damaging fishing practice in these protected areas. Bottom trawling will be banned in Greece’s three national marine parks by 2026, with the rest following before the end of the decade. Bottom trawling is a fishing practice that involves dragging heavy fishing nets across the ocean floor, destroying habitats, and releasing trapped CO2. While there have been restrictions in place in Europe for this practice, this is the first all-out ban. Source: https://bit.ly/3Up0OQc

Local fishers in North Pemba recently discovered a turtle nest and reported it to the Shehia Fisher Committee (SFC) and our local entity #BlueAlliancePECCA. 🐢🌊 In order to safeguard the turtle eggs, Blue Alliance and a team of dedicated fishers carefully moved all 48 eggs to a new hatchery site located next to our ranger station at the Manta Resort. This new site is further from the water, to ensure the eggs are well protected. Besides ongoing poaching of turtle eggs and illegal hunting of threatened sea turtles for their meat and shells, the main threats for sea turtles are becoming entangled in fishing nets and disturbance of nesting beaches by coastal development. Protecting threatened marine life is at the core of our mission at BA PECCA. By relocating the eggs to a safer site, we are increasing their chances of survival. 🙌 A big shoutout to the dedicated local communities and the committed staff of Blue Alliance PECCA for their invaluable efforts to safeguard the ocean and marine life. because of ants, lions kill fewer zebras The Washington Post reported today that 'Big-headed ants, probably brought to Kenya in the early 2000s by global shipping and tourism, kill the native ants that protect trees from elephants and other herbivores. "One impact: Elephants can eat more trees, giving lions less cover for hunting their main prey, zebras. Lions have killed fewer zebras since the ants’ arrival, a new study found." So, the Zebras win; the Lions lose (and the elephants get more to eat). There is so much advice out there about being aggressive, strong, dominant - that that is the only way to win. You are never told to watch out for the ants. Maybe we all should watch out for the ants. #personaldevelopment
