IFAW's US Country Director, Danielle Kessler, had the pleasure of joining an exciting panel discussion at this year's Jackson Wild Summit yesterday. Sharing ecosystems with the Earth's largest inhabitants, who are often apex predators, is an incredible honor, but it can also cause real, and sometimes dangerous, conflict with people. The panel, titled "Africa and North America: Comparing Wildlife Coexistence Stories" explored and discussed human-wildlife coexistence stories and strategies in Africa and North America, to explore similarities, differences, and success stories. Danielle shared our collaborative work with fishermen and mariners to protect the North Atlantic right whale from their primary threats of entanglements and vessel strikes. Together, we can work to save the North Atlantic right whale, without eliminating local livelihoods. They are capable of feeling a wide range of deep emotions, from intense grief to joy bordering on elation, as well as empathy and stunning self-awareness. They create complex, supportive societies much like our own. Taking into consideration all of that and much, much more, what’s not to love about elephants? Still, countless elephants are brutally killed every year for their ivory by greedy poachers who then leave their carcasses to rot in the sun. Today is World Elephant Day, the perfect time to find out more about these amazing animals and what we can do to preserve and protect them so they do not go the way of the mammoth. There are about 400,000 African elephants worldwide, and they are listed as being vulnerable by the IUCN Red List of threatened species. They are the world's largest land animals, weighing up to 22,000 pounds. With about 40,000 worldwide, the Asian elephant is listed as endangered. World Elephant Day is observed every year on August 12 to honour these majestic animals that embody ancient beauty, religious and environmental significance. Over the last decade, the number of elephants has significantly dropped by 62% prompting concern about their potential extinction by the next decade's end. It is estimated that everyday about 100 African elephants are killed by poachers. The desire for ivory in Asian markets has led to the slaughter of thousands of elephants. World Elephant Day, founded in 2012 by Patricia Sims and the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation of Thailand, along with numerous global conservation groups, aims to raise awareness and drive change to save these majestic animals. This powerful, collective global movement offers a way to establish and endorse conservation solutions to make the world a safer place for elephants and their habitats so future generations can appreciate them. This process also plays an indispensable part in safeguarding indigenous culture and identity. Analogously, reindeers are essential to the existence of indigenous communities in the Arctic, while the bison carries significant relevance for prairie-based societies. It is imperative for us to acknowledge and value the symbiotic relationship between nature and the indigenous way of life. Let's persist in endorsing initiatives that encourage the conservation of these crucial species and the protection of indigenous cultures. The impact of gettimg rid of invasive rodents from islands should not be underestimated. Time and again we see species bounce back almost immediately once the rodents have gone, and this seems to be playing out already on Floreana island after a matter of a few months. With over 55 species endangered on this one island alone, they have now been given a much better chance of survival. Hopefully their numbers will now increase. The next exciting stage will be to reintroduce locally extinct species back again, helping the local system regenerate and hopefully stopping more species like the Floreana mockingbird from going extinct. In my opinion these are vital projects, helping to stop species extinctions and bringing back the biodiversity our planet so desperately needs.
