Hi LinkedIn, Sunstone turned five years old this September – and I should have written some cool, celebratory humble brag post about it - but I didn’t, because… we’re so busy! The truth is, I wake up every day amazed at the incredible team that’s somehow assembled amid my policy-obsessed climate communications chaos. In light of the fact that managing this team and our ever-expanding portfolio of campaigns goes far beyond the capabilities of this particular Den Mother, I'm excited to share that we’re hiring a Managing Director! We’re looking for a very special senior leader to help oversee our campaigns and a talented, dedicated, and by goddess, adorable team providing the climate movement with the embedded communications strategy and support it deserves. You can read all about the position specifics here: https://lnkd.in/gfhQGC32 If you’re wondering why you (or whoever you thought of when you saw this post), an accomplished communications campaign maverick, should consider applying for this position, here are five good reasons: 1) You get to be a HUGE know-it-all This role is perfect for someone who simply cannot choose a favorite sector to decarbonize. Like, why run just one campaign when you could be running transportation, gas, buildings, power sector, industrial decarbonization and polluter accountability campaigns passing policy in states and nationally ALL AT ONCE, ALL THE TIME! Get in on this madness! Some say we only live once (I don’t buy it) – so why not use that one life to become an expert in as many policy sectors as possible? Let’s be insufferable, together! 2) You will be showered in SLAY emojis on slack Our team is deeply supportive. We pile on with the good vibes. You’ll be buried in positive slack emojis before you even log in. 3) Every day is bring your whole self to work day at Sunstone. Do you have kids? Pets? Parents? Partners? Cool, us too. We know how to serve our clients, partners and coalitions while also living our lives and being exactly who we are. No fronts. Just good people working hard, being weird, having fun, getting results. 4) You’ll get to make the rules The only rule we have at Sunstone is that we show up, give it our all, and do what is needed to win. Honestly, we could probably use more rules. This is a role for a leader who wants to make an impact. Bring your ambition. 5) You’ll get to lead and collaborate with the best team in the business I genuinely don’t know how this happened, but somehow, the Sunstone team has grown into a high-functioning pulsating mass of communications glory. This year, we’re averaging 3 earned media placements per day, every day. That’s more than 900 individually-placed stories this year so far. That is just one metric of success, but TL;DR: This is a team you can be proud of! Come over here and let us be proud of YOU TOO!

🚨 Announcement time 🚨 In my role as Climate Network Manager at Solutions Journalism Network I'm always looking for ways to connect climate solutions journalists and help shift coverage of the global climate crisis from a focus on unsolvable and apocalyptic narratives to one of hope, where individuals and communities are inspired and catalyzed to take action on climate solutions. That's why we're launching a Climate Collaborative Seed Fund — a grant to support a project manager for a news collaboration producing solutions coverage of the global climate crisis. We know collaboratives — where multiple news and community organizations come together to report and distribute journalism focused on specific topic areas — constitute a singularly suitable model to extend the impact of solutions reporting. Since 2019 SJN has supported 15 collaboratives through our Local Media Project. The Climate Collaborative Seed Fund builds off these successful endeavors by offering a one-time $25,000 grant for a U.S.-based climate-focused collaborative to hire or support a project manager for six months. The project manager will receive support and monthly coaching calls from SJN. Interested in learning more? Register for an informational Zoom call on Oct. 5. Or reach out directly for more details. I can't wait to hear about what you all are doing and the amazing climate collaboratives are happening around the U.S.! https://lnkd.in/gmZaBGtn

Navigating through rough waters of reputational risks can be challenging, but with a bit of creativity and persistence, turning the tide is doable. A few years back, during my time as a communications consultant, I found myself in the midst of a project that wasn't exactly a crowd-pleaser. It was clear that we needed to shake things up to change the narrative. My team and I decided to roll up our sleeves and get creative 💡 We knew there were two sides to every story, so we tapped into storytelling resources to highlight the positives. The project itself would have significant benefits for the country, and the company behind it was also investing in sustainability and human development on a broader scale to mitigate its impact. 🌱 Drawing inspiration from the UN Sustainable Development Goals, we crafted a compelling narrative that underscored the project's positive impact in the social, environmental, and economic fields. We embarked on a year-long proactive outreach campaign, inviting journalists to witness it all firsthand. And you know what? It worked! Our story made front-page headlines and got airtime on TV and radio. That’s when we started to see a shift 🚀 Through a mix of media placements and some savvy lobbying, we managed to reshape the public discourse surrounding the project. Today, when I look back, it's heartening to see how the public perception of that project has done a complete 180°, with the negatives pushed aside. Have you ever had to navigate tricky waters like these in your career? Let's swap stories! #Reputation #CommunicationsStrategy #PublicPerception #MediaOutreach #PositiveImpact

New year, new adventure! After 11 years at Environmental Defense Fund, where I’ve had the honor of collaborating with brilliant, passionate change-makers across the climate movement, I’m starting the next chapter in my career. While at EDF, I worked on some of the most pressing environmental issues of our time, using multidisciplinary strategies ranging from advocacy campaigns to markets and finance to community organizing and more. I’ve built teams, developed deep relationships with partners and stakeholders, inspired donors, and learned so much about what durable impact looks like, as well as my own strengths and core values. I am going to take some time over the next few months to reflect, connect, and sketch out what I want to do with the next chapter, which will continue to center work related to climate change and community. Here are my starting points: 🏡 After years of working at national and global levels, I’m interested in directing more focus toward climate resilience and adaptation in the place I live (Texas). 🗳️ I’ll also lean into supporting great candidates and voter engagement during this very important election year. ✨ While I take my time finding the next full-time gig, I’d love to apply my skills and experience to consulting projects (not necessarily Texas-based) in the interim - so please message me if you need help with with strategy & planning, facilitation, fundraising, convening, project design & start-up, research or communications! 🌱 More gardening, swimming, art-making, and being present with friends and family. 👷♀️ Learning new things, starting with a welding class at my local community college!! I am excited to connect with likeminded folks to learn, dream, and explore possibilities, so please reach out if you’d like to talk or have recommendations for me. #climatechange #community #strategy #impact #purpose #climateresilience #climateadaptation #texas #collaboration #consulting #gardening #creativity #welding

McKay said humor can be a powerful tool for climate advocacy Awesome article and my take aways are: - Consider using creative and innovative approaches in your advertising, such as humor, horror movie-style trailers, or other engaging storytelling techniques. These can capture people's attention and make your message more memorable. - #ClimateAdvocacy campaigns should leverage a range of emotions, from humor and wit to rage, grief, compassion, hope, love, and courage. Emotional connections can help people connect with the urgency of the issue. - Recognize that climate change is interconnected with other social and environmental issues. #Collaborate with other movements and advocacy groups to create a unified front for positive change. https://lnkd.in/eZuaVMFR
